Tonneau Cover Recommendation

Post by Vic » Wed Jun 05, 2019 5:54 am

Sorry, I know this has been discussed a million times on the forum but I'm hoping you can recommend a tonneau cover that is best for the following:

A little background: I currently have a Lazerlite one piece aluminum cover which is great, except that it is a two person job to to remove it, and the one piece cover gets in the way when hauling bigger loads.

Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Easily removable & lightweight, but solid - I don't think the soft folding tops are for me. I'm thinking it should be either retractable or fold up, and when retracted, doesn't take up a lot of bed room. I'm thinking the fold ups win in this category?
2. Water proof. I'm looking for a cover that really keeps the water out.
3. Quiet. I've heard that some of the folding/retractable covers will chatter or vibrate which would drive me crazy!
4. Appearance. I know this will depend on what you think looks good, but what do you think is the best looking cover?
5. Should work with a cargo bed extender. I have the RAM/AMP research bed extender.
6. Best quality.

Thanks!

BAKFlip mx4 or F1...cant remember which one i have but the bakflip hard folder is great.

so easy to use! and meets all your specs.

only problem is you will need to buy some extra washers.
the way the locking mechanism works, you can get much better engagement with extra washers, that BAKflip neglects to provide you with,

I second the BAKflip. Mine has kept water out, is easy to install, stays solid, it’s been a dream! Even helps with fuel economy. I’m glad it came with the truck when I bought it! Hahaha!

BAKflip is garbage. Have had top models and both fell apart in a years time and those jerk offs refuse to honor the warranty.

Love my diamondback. Also have the factory RAM foldable cover that worked great. But wanted a more solid cover. I do have the rambox and the diamond back does not seal the greatest at the tailgate, so I do get some water in the bed.

Someone at PWM had modified theirs slightly to get it to seal a lot tighter. I don’t have leaks at the tailgate, I have them elsewhere.

Diamondback doesn’t claim the ram box as waterproof, the non-ram box beds apparently seal a lot better.

I went with the diamondback. They have two different guage metal. I thought getting the heavey guage would mean it would last longer and it may outlast the truck, but holy crap is it heavy! Unless you plan to put atv's or something on top, I would go with the lighter version. My dad has the lighter version and its much lighter but still plenty strong enough to stand on and security is no problem. I also got the optional black coating. Not sure how much weight that adds but its work to take it off and put it on. I also got the optional cross box. Its not made well and I must have over loaded mine and it broke at the welds. I do not recommend the cross tool box from diamondback. Fyi- mine leaks more than I would like. Have to keep things in plasic tubs. Its very secure but not that impressed for the money I spent on it.

The heavy duty is really heavy duty. But I drive around with a 37 Toyo strapped to the top of mine. The only issues I’ve seen is it you load across the hinges. It levers the latches and you’ll have a hell of time locking and keeping it locked. I needed new plastic tips for the locking rod as I tore mine up doing that, but they were very cheap to replace.

It is supposed to be nearly waterproof on a non-ram box. But I’ve got a ram box and it leaks when it rains. Which isn’t exactly often here. I did see someone at PWiM who had reinforced the weather seals on their ram box version. He’d put some plastic board along the front, caulked around other parts. Said it was much tighter.
