More problems

Truck started driving strange. Was accelerating very hesitantly, and then surging. Check engine light came on so ran to autozone and scanned the code. Came back as oil sending unit, took it to dealership and they are saying its the cam, lifters and gasket to the tune of $3000. Not sure what to do, any advice?

Any strange new noises associated with your issue, whats your oil pressure reading?

Its about $500 worth of OE parts, do you know anyone who can pull your heads for less than $2500?

To be honest, it has had a wonky acceleration for a while now. I have noticed more than usual ticking or rattling, but i always escribed it to the exhaust leak.

No, that's the problem. Not a lot of shops in my area. My usual mechanic is "somewhat retired" and doesn't do invasive surgery anymore.

Did they pull your motor apart to diagnose or just tell you that was the issue? I had a ford ranger that had the issues you are describing and it turned out to be the cam shaft position sensor.

What code # is setting in your computer?

The accelerator pedal position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, electronic throttle control motor, engine oil pressure sensor all share the same five volt reference signal from the PCM. If one of those components screws up or the PCM itself screws up on that reference voltage circuit it could cause the issues that you’re describing. It could set codes for any one, or all of those systems.

However you may still have noisy cam & lifter issues that are a separate problem.

The 10-13 5.7 Hemi's have a know problem with the cam wearing prematurely I don't know for sure if that's your issue but it is not uncommon for those year trucks. Do a google search on "2011 ram hemi cam/lifter failure" and your''l see some examples.

Dealers are the most expensive but usually do a good job, if you know of a reputable engine shop in your area get quote from them as well.

If you are up for the challenge you could do it yourself but be prepared to spend a decent amount of time and money to get everything you need (tools, parts, shop manual, etc.) to do it right and make it reliable.

Hydraulic lifters in general (Chrysler or GM) are known to only last around 70K miles. Do a search for some of the better known engine builders and they will almost always recommend new lifters.
