The phoenix rises from the ashes

Post by ldgregory » Sat Oct 07, 2017 6:54 pm

Well, this forum was about as FUBAR'd as it gets. I won't bore you with the details, but this has to be the hairiest recoveries I've ever done in my life. The good news is everything has been rebuilt from scratch (including a new reliable hard drive) and even though there was some data corruption, I was able to correct most of it and I don't believe we lost much of anything. My first priority was getting this forum up, now I've got to focus on fixing the other sites and databases that were on this server when it crashed in a fiery ball of flame.

Ace and I are working on a plan to migrate the forum to vBulletin and host it in a real data center. It's going to take another month roughly, but we'll get there.

Yes, I know it looks a bit different. I figured since it was all jacked up, might as well upgrade everything in the process. The upgrade wiped out the customizations I had like themes and site logo images.

Have you guys considered https://xenforo.com/ instead of vbulletin. There was a big split in our community a couple years ago now when the company got bought and the developers who built vbullletin left to keep building a better platform. Worth looking into. A lot of features this site could benefit from in modernizing.

No, but we can look at it too. PHBB has a whole slew of mods as well, I just never really wanted to stick a lot on, because it complicates upgrades and migrations.

Sorry about that. Normally, I'd redirect to another page to let people know something was going on if it was going to be prolonged, but the entire webserver was toast, so I couldn't do that.

Most likely, the registry will go away and we’ll replicate the functionality into the forum directly. I wrote the registry site a couple years before I stood up the forum so they were two completely different sites, databases and more irritatingly, user logins.

I’m hoping we can replicate most of it directly in the forum. The site and DB are safe, so we haven’t lost anything.

As for forum look and feel themes, we’re keeping it for right now until the migration happens. We can set up multiple themes and the users can choose which one they like best in their profile, but right now, the default Pro Silver is the only one installed.

Appreciate that, but even if someone drove over to the house, it’s kind of a one keyboard operation! ;-)

I think ok once the migration is done, it should be back up. Part of the issue is going from the .org to the .com

I'm thinking perhaps for the migration to occur sometime in November. There's a loose plan in place.

I'll also look at what Mike Key suggested, https://xenforo.com/ to seen how it compares to vBulletin.

I noticed that the forum members' info on the right side pane of the posts are showing up with Model Year: 2014 for members with newer trucks. This includes members with 2015's, 2016's, 2017's etc.

Not a big deal for me since my PW is actually a 2014

Yeah, when you sign up 2014 is the highest year in the "what year is your PW?" field. I noticed that when I signed up with my 2015.

I believe vBulletin's is more though. Free and open source is my choice too, but depends on how crazy you want to get a feature set without spending the time doing it yourself.

Some of the things like responsive images, can be fixed fast with CSS.
