WHITE Knuckle Sliders - Salt

Post by Bill2014 » Sat Mar 18, 2017 8:31 am

They use a lil salt in this neck of the woods

Maybe I should have opted for a white powder coat - or brown for the long haul

Thanks... it won't remain nice for long without a lot of attention. I've turned the sliders completely white in just 10 minutes on the road.

It is really tough to keep hitch parts, steps, or sliders looking nice here. If you scrape your slider rail (like we all do) you have bare metal exposed.

It doesn't matter what you do when you live in the salt belt if you have your truck out in the winter. I've washed the salt off regularly on previous vehicles, but that didn't make the bodies last any longer. Every time the salt spray gets wet, it has the chance to react through any microscopic opening in any protection you have. When it's cold, it may be best to just leave the dry salt alone - it needs water to do it's damage.

And never keep a salty vehicle in a heated garage - you will have swiss cheese in 5 years.

It's like Windex, or a Swiss Army knife. Good for all occasions.

- it's a losing cause: MI, NY, OH, PA, NJ, VA, FL--all places I've lived, all torturous on your vehicle w/o copiuous effort, which gets less fun to maintain as you get older.

When my wife and I were dating she bought a used Ford Escape. It was a nice vehicle for the time we had it, but I made sure that time was short before it became a rust bucket. i could open the hood and any exposed unpainted metal was corroding. The vehicle came from Michigan and had only spent a couple winters there. I can't imagine what multiple winters do to vehicles in that part of the country. Out here in the west Utah uses a lot of salt in the winter time and they can get pretty eaten up as well. I looked at a used 07 Powerwagon before I got my 2010. The thing came from Utah and the underneath was all rusted. I wanted no part of that vehicle.

I find the best way to avoid salt damage to my PW is to drive my wife's pickup in the winter!

Because of the salt, I am currently in the process of removing, sanding, painting, lubing & reinstalling my winch rollers. I know they are not supposed to be painted or lubed but I am doing that to prevent any further corrosion. They were horribly bad. One of the things i guess i should have Fluid Filmed, but didn't.
