2017 Power Wagon Q&A

Post by ulixes50 » Sat Feb 25, 2017 3:33 pm

I ordered a 2017 Power Wagon on 1/7/2017 and picked it up at the dealership on 2/14/2017. I ordered it with the badging delete, Ramboxes, tonneau cover, leather/luxury interior package, and a few other extras. I've only put 2 tanks of gas through it so far, but I'm averaging about 13 MPG on 87 octane in southern Ohio. Overall, I'm loving the Power Wagon and very happy with my purchase. I used the forum pretty extensively to get information prior to ordering, so I just wanted to return the favor if anyone had any questions or wanted to know anything specific to the 2017.

If anyone is planning on custom ordering, I will say that the leather/luxury package is well worth it. Very nice interior look and the package includes a whole list of other extras (backup camera, parking sensors, heated/ventilated seats, etc). Also, depending on your height and/or personal preference, adding power adjustable pedals might be a good move as the Power Wagon doesn't have a telescoping steering wheel adjustment. And even though I may never need all the extra amps, I went ahead and ordered it with dual alternators just to be on the safe side

Incidentally, if anyone's getting ready to drop the hammer on a custom order, I would highly recommend contacting Ken Gregory. I got turned on to him through some folks over on the Cummins forum. He was $1,000 under dealer invoice plus all current incentives from FCA. Definitely one of the most pleasant car buying experiences I've ever had. He's at Tom O'Brien CDJR in Indianapolis and it was only about a 2-hour drive for me to pick up the Power Wagon in person, but I believe he can deliver or drop-ship almost anywhere. His email/phone are on his website http://www.indytruckchampion.com/home.html

Very sharp! I may have to break down and order one as well. Just too hard to sit around and wait for the color I want with the options I want to drop onto a dealer's lot.
My specifics are:
White/black
Or
Black/black
Leather/lux
Dual alts- if I special order I'm getting this.
No sunroof
No RamBox

Good luck with yours!

Thank you! I had never factory ordered a vehicle through the dealership before, but I'm definitely happy with the results. Got exactly what I wanted for the same price (actually less) than the trucks sitting on lots that were all missing one thing or the other. Even though it was delivered quickly (5 weeks), the biggest downside to ordering is the wait... that 5 weeks seemed to take forever...

Also, agree on the 'no sunroof' option, that's $1000 I'll be putting towards my White Knuckle sliders...

Another Dinosaur here as well. That is a sharp looking truck. I'm kinda color blind so i gotta ask- what color is that exactly ? Loving my 2008, but now that we are gonna be traveling the country soon, the wife is hinting towards an auto trans---so she can drive if something happens to me, medically or an accident or something while we are out in the middle of nowhere. I just can't bring myself to do it yet. This is my "holy grail" truck. It's paid for, so if we could afford the payments on a new truck of some kind (Chevy Colorado ZR2 diesel) (or another PW) I may still keep it for a while yet, & use the PW for local-ish camping. IDK. Like your new truck though, sharp. Congrat's.

It's granite crystal metallic... basically a real dark grey.

Yes, it's two-tone Granite Crystal Metallic over Black. I went back and forth between this color and Maximum Steel for a while... but ultimately decided to go with the Granite Crystal Metallic after seeing them in person... seemed to go well with the more blacked-out exterior of the 2017 Power Wagon.

That's a unique truck, definitely worth holding on to for camping and whatnot. Not that the manual is even an option on the PWs anymore, but I'm in the same boat with my wife and the auto trans. Happy hunting for the next truck!

Are you towing or being towed? Motorhome towing a ZR2 would be awesome. Or a PW towing a trailer. Problem is PW can only tow so big and if i was living in it... it wouldn't be big enough. And the PW is for sure to big to tow. ZR2 might need a flatbed though or at least a dolly. That's why a lot if people tow jeeps. You can set them up for flat towing with just a tow bar.

You can set up most any vehicle to flat tow with a tow bar. Jeeps just have an easier time with less holes in the front bumper. I've seen everything from a Santa Fe all the way to a fiesta and even a hummer h3. People tow the weirdest things behind a motor home.

Everyone's version of a "holy grail" is different. I found my holy grail just a week or two ago, a regular cab long box fully loaded with leather and heated seats, Laramie two tone granite crystal metallic with the lower in rockers in bright silver. Manual transmission (g56) with ridiculously low mileage. Under 15 k. Unfortunately I can't get it just yet.

We are towing this: 18' & 3500lbs

Image

A ZR2 diesel should pull it almost as good as our PW. Only 6 lb ft of torque difference beteen the 2.8L Duramax diesel & the 5.7L Hemi in our PW. It is lighter, narrower (maybe ?) & shorter, but not by much.

The towing experience will be different. If you pull an all day drive that ZR2 is going to wear you out physically.

Yea, pull it with the PW, there is a big difference towing from a mid-size and a full size.

Worked but i was limited to weekenders at best and could only go about 100 miles before i had to start looking for gas...

Have they even listed the tow rating with the ZR2 yet? Offroad suspensions usually take a tow rating hit and its already a midsize... i had a 4400 dry trailer i tried to pull with an 11 Tacoma and that was a terrible idea...

Worked but i was limited to weekenders at best and could only go about 100 miles before i had to start looking for gas...

Re: 2017 Power Wagon Q&A

Indeed, they have, it's 7,000 lbs.

I've been pulling a 27ft 6890lbs Airstream for a year with the PW, and his is 18ft & 3500lbs, he should be good with the PW. I believe my 2015's is rated just under 10k, like 9800 or something, been awhile. Not a problem for me personally. I know that's a deal breaker for some. I can't imagine needing to tow over 10k until I buy a 5th wheel, which is likely to never happen. :)
