6.4 Hemi and Throttle Body Swaps (Moe's Specifically)

Post by NickTF » Thu Jan 26, 2017 10:03 am

I've done a bit of interweb searching and it appears the Moes 87mm ported throttle body produces some nice gains both in part throttle response and dyno gains with zero tuning required. I'm curious as to if anyone has tried one and if they've noticed similar. This truck (15' PW on 37" Toyo MTs) is about as responsive as a dead fish to throttle input below 1800rpm so improving response is worth a few bucks to me for certain.

Hello NickTF,

There might be a very small, if any, seat of the pants improvement but don't expect much difference. The bottom line is if you want to feel more power during acceleration with 37" tires you need do a gear swap 4.56 or even 4.88.

The reason being is the Hemi makes it's power in the mid to high RPM range (410-hp/5,600rpm & 429-torque/4,000rpm). With 4.10 factory gears and 37" tires you don't get to the engine's higher RPM range until you're moving faster. The gear upgrade will bring that optimal/higher RPM range in at much lower speed, make sense?

The end result will be much better off the line acceleration unfortunately gears are more money than a throttle body.

I'm talking to several well known hemi performance shops trying to get a head and cam/ lth build going this summer and all of them didn't want to sell me a throttle body. They said there is no gain to be had unless you're using forced induction.

Yea from my LS days, I can tell you throttles don't do much. They're a supporting mod. On their own, mostly useless.

Re gear would be optimal but that's way more money and effort than I intend to likely ever put in this truck. Definitely would be the biggest way to get a sotp kick.

I had a ls1 I did about every bolt on too before going into the motor. The ported tb was a nice small addition but that's all and was expected.

From what I gathered from combing through the info I found online these trucks appear to respond well to the Moe's part. For what it's worth the heads on this 6.4 crush factory ls1 stuff so it would not surprise me to see these big hemis respond much better.

I got nothing, sorry.

But it still boggles my mind that they can't or won't get the transmission gear ratios right in a gas powered Heavy Duty truck.
