Dual Alt question

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

Dual Alt question

Post by Ramajama » Wed Oct 19, 2016 1:06 am

I went in to one of my preferred RAM dealerships today and looked at their last '16 PW and we talked about the '17. I thought that maybe the 16 would trip my trigger enough to maybe work a deal but it didnt. I like the looks of the '17 better and I want it alot more loaded out than the PW they had in stock, which was pretty basic. So we talked about what I wanted and availability.

Of course, I want everything LOL! And he said that my best bet is to just do a build sheet and order one. Ive bought over a dozen new vehicles and Ive never "ordered" one before. Im not sure I want to go that route. In reality, I can live with a loaded out truck that lands on a lot, even if it doesnt have every single thing I want, but as long its a color I want. BUT the one thing I was really interested in was the dual alternator. He quickly noted that if I wanted that, I would have to build one as they rarely get allocated to stock with that option..
He said every one that he's ever seen someone try to retro fit an extra alternator has had issues.

The dual alt option doesnt cost much so thats not an issue.... My real question is...is the dual alternator worth it enough to go through what I consider a pain to build one? My plans are to actually wean myself off my car/truck addiction and actually keep this bad boy for awhile (which for me is longer than 2 years) and I plan the try to build it into a pretty legit overland type vehicle. I know I'll put some aux lights on it, CB, amp, air compressor at the minimum....and its got the winch.
Enlighten me guys. :geek:

Pain to build one? The only pain is waiting for it, which you will have to do anyway if you want a '17. It's a no-brainer. Order one and get exactly what you want!

Thanks! I think my biggest concern about building one is that I feel like I'm getting screwed. I'm pretty good at negotiating car deals and I don't feel like I can negotiate one when building one to order and rebates are only good at the time that the vehicle arrives. I guess I'll find out if I can negotiate, if not I ain't building one and I'll take what I can find on a lot somewhere. But one other positive is that I could special order it in Omaha Orange, which was one of the colors they had at its launch.... but not one of the 6 stock colors offered.... but is available to order ;)

What do you think about the dual alt?

In terms of the pain factor, if you actually need the output of the dual alts, it is a lot easier (and cheaper) to just order the truck that way than to retrofit either a dual system or a high-output single alt. Any time you start changing things, you introduce new potential failure points (on top of the ones that the factory throws in at no extra charge) and potential warranty issues.

You sure that color is not called "Redneck Orange?"

Order one. Get it exactly the way you want it. Gives you even more reason to keep it. That's what i did. NO regrets here.

I really do like the dual alt option. That would be a must have for me. Yes, the 2017's got me wanting one. Not in the cards now though. Wifes turn for a new vehicle. Her 2010 Corolla has 145k & the 08' PW only has 43k. Subie Outback for her next year.

Unless you really need the dual alternator setup I would get the upgraded single alternator 180 amp to 220 amp, less moving parts to trouble-shoot/maintain when there's a problem.

On a truck as expensive as a Power Wagon, and especially if you want it "optioned up", it doesn't make any sense to do anything other than order it exactly the way you want it. And you can absolutely negotiate a good deal on a truck order. Use the online build tool to configure exactly the truck you want. Send that build sheet to every dealership in a 6-hour drive radius and tell them to quote for it, and they're competing against other dealerships. Most will blow you off, or send you a ridiculous price, but a few will play ball. Once you have the serious dealerships identified, you can try to leverage them against each other to get the price down even more. That's how I bought my 2015, and I felt like I got a fair price, The dealer I bought from honored the rebates that were active when I placed my order.

Yes, you should be able to negotiate on an ordered truck just as well as one off the lot. If not, your dealer isnt doing you any favors.

As far as the dual alternators, I wouldnt worry too much about it. The option to install them later (or add the one) is there, but it is much more costly than ordering it that way from the factory (up around $800 or more when adding it).

When I bought my truck I literately walked into the dealer thinking I was ordering one that day. Thing is, I had found one that was basically exactly what I would have ordered (minus the dual alternators and tow mirrors) on a lot one state over, and the salesman told me they could get it here within the week as apposed to waiting for 8-10 weeks for my order. That is the route I chose.

But, If your looking for a '17 model (not a leftover '16), I would without a doubt order it the way you want... you gotta wait for it anyway!

Thats pretty much how he explained it to me and brought up several examples he's seen from trucks hes sold.

I'd take the orange even if it as called Redneck Orange..LOL! But first, I have to see black with the silver graphics before I decide.

Thank you all for the other replies. They have all eased my mind and building/ordering one is probably the way Im going to have to go.
I feel like, no more than it costs, Im just going to have to throw that dual alternator in when I place my order. Better to have it, even if I dont need it, than need it and not have it. Sounds like the consensus is that its a worthwhile option to have.

I ordered my '99 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4, my '08 PW, and my '13 Jeep GC TrailHawk. The hard part is waiting on them to show up. As for dealing on price. Check to see if Ram has any deals and/or rebates going on. At the time of ordering. You can use them, plus what you can get from the dealer. On my '99. I got $4000 off because of a rebate. My PW. I got $4500 rebate, plus another $4500 off for employee discount from where I worked at. My GC, I got $3000 for rebate plus another $2500 employee discount.

I ordered mine, everything but a CD player and navi... I know my way home. My thought on the dual alternators was that it would be useful for charging trailer batteries and recharging your own battery after a long line pull with the winch. Good Luck.

Bit off topic, but sense it was mentioned, has anybody successfully ordered a '17 in Omaha Orange? I'm also in the camp that fell in love with the truck in the release video, and hung on Mr. Hegbloom's words when he said it could be ordered in the low volume/fleet colors. Of all the dealers I've talked to, I have it limited down to two. One dealer (the one I would prefer based on price and reviews) basically said I'm probably SOL, but he's going to talk with the fleet manager and see if it can be done. The other started down the same route, and is now talking directly with his Chrysler rep about building it as demo/test vehicle, who says "it's possible, but may not be feasible"....whatever that means. I also see on the build sheet that Rambox and Low volume paint cant be done together, which is another bummer, idk if maybe that one sales manager may have seen the tester truck route as a way to get around that as well.

Either way, short story long, has anybody at all successfully ordered the new PW in Omaha Orange? If so, pass on any information, including where you ordered it from. Been wanting a PS since the manual trans was an option. Already was trying to make it happen this year, but when I saw that reveal video over the summer I knew the orange with the new graphics was what I wanted.
