2007 rough idle at startup?

Hi,

This morning I started my truck and it had a hell of a miss, applied a little throttle and smoothed out. Went to the gas station and after I filled up, it did the same thing, leaving the station I felt a miss so I gave it a lot of throttle and the check engine light came on.

I haven't gotten a chance to see what codes are thrown but stricks me weird as the truck drove fine Friday and sat all weekend. Its got 110000 on it also its a stick.

What are the common causes for this?

Regards,

I'm going to follow your post if you don't mind. Weird that my 2005 just showed this symptom the other day, and is just sluggish it seems after a first start and drive of the morning, happened more so on cooler mornings. I was leaning towards transmission but it didn't quite feel like that, more reminded me of a clogged fuel filter or something, like the engine wasn't getting the amount of fuel it was demanding. If I feather the throttle it doesn't do it, but if I need to accelerate to say merge into traffic that is when it chokes. After about 5-10 minutes it's fine.

So not going to say this is the cause but that ultimately was some of the same symptoms I had with my head gasket leak. I would suggest pulling a few of the plugs and checking them out. If you have a scope take a look inside the cylinder. If your cylinder is clean (meaning no carbon) you could potentially have a head gasket leak. Mine was small.

Most likely your CEL is a cylinder misfire. Pull the code and go to that cylinder first.

Possibly a bad plug or coil, how many miles on your truck, when was the last plug change?

Coder, Jim stated he is at 110000, mine is at 88,000, probably still the original plugs on mine.

Hi all,

Got the codes:

P0301 & U0168

Missfire cylinder 1 and "u0168-lost communication with vehicle security control module (wireless ignition node or win)"

Funny thing is my truck is a ST so doesnt have key fobs or auto start.

Plugs were changed maybe 10,000 miles ago, cleared the codes and see how it starts tomorrow morning.

Thinking might need a coil maybe time for a upgrade

To test the coil just unplug it, if the issue goes away that's the problem.

Hi,

Well the codes went away for a day, was damp out the first day it happened, today its raining and came back again at lunch (rained all day), if its the same code I am going to swap the coil with one of the others and see if it follows that coil.

Has anyone had to replace a coil and did you only do 1 or did you do the set?

Also I see a bunch of different ones listed in Summit, are there really better coils, my truck is stock, but any performance gains might be nice and help my mpgs.
Which ones have you all used?

Thanks for the responses will let you know how this experiment goes

Are there really better coils? - Not really, stock coils have been successfully used in high performance Hemi build-ups and make all the spark you'll ever need.

Did you replace with OE plugs? That can make a difference. I would lean towards a coil like you stated swap with another cylinder and wait for it to throw the code again and see if it follows

Hi again,

Yes were champion plugs, checked the code and now its saying P0201 misfire at injector cylinder number 1. I may try some fuel injection cleaner (Lucus) to the tank and see what comes of it

If you are getting P0201, check the electrical connection on the injector. Clean with non-chlorinated brake cleaner. If that doesn't change anything, then take both spark plugs out of that cylinder and look at their tip condition. You can google "lean spark plug" or "rich..." And look at the tips and compare to yours. All 16 of mine looked to be running a little lean, I don't know if that's normal.

Hi all,

We'll its been over a week and no more codes or issues, must have been some build up in the injector.

Knock on wood it was a fluke

Hi again,

Well no fluke, rained big time today and the light came back, rough idle, codes this time were P0201 & B3003 which I can't seem to find.

I used my Hypertech unit to get the codes.

Any ideas?

This weekend l will pull the connectors and clean the terminals and see what that does. As well as pull the plugs and see if they are ok or not.

P0201 is a generic fuel injector code on your first fuel injector. My guess is moisture in your gas. Try putting some seafoam in.

B3003 is a body code. You obviously had a door open when you ran the codes.

I had this issue on my 2004 2500 QC 4x4. It turned out to be a coil, 2nd one from front on pass side of truck. When driving in rain & slush & snow, when the engine & under hood area became wet, & then you parked it, it would drip directly onto that coil. It cracked the plastic eventually (from the hot/cold cycles) & then it corroded internally big time. By the time the dealer replaced it under warranty, it was 2x the size of the other coils & all the plastic was stretched paper thin. They said they never seen anything like it !!!

Hi,

Well 4 months later my check engine light came on again, and had a few sputters.

Got the following codes:
P0201(injector 1) & P2101(abs? )

I had since my first issue swapped the number 1 & 2 injectors so I would have thought I'd get a code on #2 injector.

Any thoughts?

Here's a DodgeTalk forum post for code P0201 problem that seems very similar to your issue, the guy resolved it by reseating all the injector connections and resetting the pcm.
http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums/showthr ... ight=p0201

P2101-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR PERFORMANCE - replacing the throttle body seems to be the common fix for this issue you can get one for about $128.62 from http://www.stevewhiteparts.com PN 53032801AC

Here's a post on how to reset the pcm on a 2002-2008 ram:

I had the P2101 code on my truck after cleaning the throttle body and a few other things. I had either brake cleaner or water inside the connector that plugs into the throttle body. I just sprayed inside both ends with brake cleaner and then blew them out with air and it fixed the problem. It gave me the red lightning bolt on the dash with the code before I fixed it and had a dead throttle.

Try the cheap stuff first, unhook the battery, clean out all the fuel injectors and throttle body connectors with some electrical connector spray! If that does not work you might want to try a new throttle body and go from there, the injector misfire could be a downstream symptom.

You know I got a P2101 code right after I blow a valve seat on my 07 because of the loss of compression in the cylinder, maybe you have one that's a little loose and has not blow yet, I hope not, pull the head off on that side and take a look if all else fails.
