Hey everyone

Had the truck in today for the first oil change.

Later today, I was out running errands and noticed a smell of burnt oil. I pulled into a gas station and got under the truck. I found that the left front radius arm, the top and back half of the front diff, one of the motor mounts and one of the front cross members were all soaked in oil.

I spent a good amount of time looking at the oil filter and the dip stick and the engine itself. This all looked dry, so I am assuming that this was a result of a spill during the oil change. I can also see that the oil filter probably IS kinda hard to get to, and that it may not be possible to completely avoid spilling a bit of oil when removing the filter but still.... I would have thought they'd at least wipe down any spillage before letting me get the truck back.

Frustrating....

Is this normal to you guys?

My wife said that sort of thing used to happen to her car before we met.

Shoddy oil chamged job for sure. I just changed mine last week, and there is quite a bit of a mess when the filter is taken off, but hell with less than half a rag i had it all cleaned up off the truck no prob.

Does your truck have a black plastic pan on the frame directly under the filter, with a funnel-like hole in the middle of it?

One the 5.7hemi, it's easy to stick a piece of cardboard up there to channel that oil down to a pan but virtually impossible to change the filter without getting oil all over everything you mentioned without something. But yes, thats why I dont take my vehicles to get the oil changed. One of the last times the dealer changed the oil in the truck, the person spilled oil while putting fresh oil in, in that case, it dripped down onto the manifold and burned off, pulled up to the first red light and had smoke coming from under the hood

One thing I have seen happen is the oil filter is not tightened enough so on start up the oil shoots out of the seal.

On the 5.7 filter change - I put a funnel with a long tube up to the bottom of the guide that is under the filter and un screw the filter. I can change without a single drop spilt using this method. I also use a 5 gallon bucket rather then a normal oil pan. The high sides prevent any splatter.

The 6.4 trucks have a plastic catch pan/funnel under the oil filter. If they didn't wipe that out after they were done, it would probably hold onto enough oil to make quite a mess once the truck is moving.

Hmmm, I am not seeing that on my truck.

Yes, my 2015 6.4 has the plastic catch funnel and with a bit of sense and patience it is quite easy to make very very little mess. Find another place for oil change service whether your truck has the catch funnel or not.

I use an old windshield washer fluid 1 gallon container. Wash it out good. Cut just the bottom off. Has a built in handle & you have the choice of taking the cap off or not. Works great, catches the filter & all.

Look in the vicinity of your Smart Bar actuator. The spout of the funnel is slot-shaped, about 1/2" x 1-1/2" if my mental ruler is calibrated correctly.

Just had mine serviced and yes, I can tell where they had to clean up. Further dumb ass dealer still doesn't understand how to service the front drive shaft.

I'm pretty sure I started doing this after you suggested it. Works great, I just hold it up under the filter as I'm unscrewing it and let it fall into the jug along with all the oil and then drop the whole thing in the oil pan. Done

I use a 24" piece of 3" PVC conduit that I cut longitudinally to change mine. The pipe slides under the guide and clears the steering stabilizer. Oil drains right into my bucket and the filter slides along the pipe to a point where I can get it out of the way.

Same here, KISS method...it's simple & effective.
