Need the 1 1/2" (38mm) deep socket to remove/install sensor. Not finding much. Got suggestions?

Transfer case position sensor socket

Post by Low_Sky » Wed Jun 15, 2016 7:40 pm

Did you call your local auto parts stores and see if they have one available as a loaner? Probably won't have it if it's an oddball size, but it never hurts to ask.

I needed one and just bought a cheap 3/4" drive socket set. You can get this set for the price of one socket. http://m.harborfreight.com/21-piece-sae ... 20provided

I got this one though. Wanted the 6 point sockets and it had good reviews https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0037JFL ... ref=plSrch

I don't know how deep you need.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Lowe's website showed the socket. Only about $8.00. It is a standard size (not deep). Was not in stock at my store. I checked a smaller socket to see if they would even be deep enough . Looks like too short due to connector on top.

Grainger's has socket for $33.00. Believe it is standard size also.

Saw Harbor Freight 3/4" drive set on line. Standard not deep.

Will try auto parts for loaner tool. Hadn't thought about that.

Standard size sockets just aren't deep enough. Limited room on top of case to work. The good news is I don't believe it is in there very tight if you can get socket.

Here is the one I ended up getting. Works great and a nice socket.

Been looking around to find something local but no deal. Home Depot has the Tekton socket for $14.99 but not in stores. Just went ahead and ordered from above link . Thanks to all.

I was thinking it doesn't look like it would be hard to unscrew. There just aren't many threads on there. But after spending about an hour trying to get the connector off the top... hint... ( got some pliers up there and squeeze at the top) the thought of trying to work with something bigger in that area just wasn't for me.

Update.

Good: Socket worked fine. It only needed about a half of a turn to loosen to hand tight. I can see how channel lock would be enough.

Bad: serv4wd light still comes on. Driving on freeway, light will come on and go off at about 25 mile distances. Locker switch flashes in off position. Sway bar does disconnect.

Next up: smart bar and locker connectors.

I have same issues as you.
Done clean magnets, new fluid, cleaned/greased smart bar connector, swapped transfer case sensor.

I've been driving the truck more, lately it's been staying off. However when it doesn't, it shuts off after 25 miles or so.

When the lights are off and I go to engage rear or front/rear that's when the rear starts flashing and service 4wd start flashing again.

About ready to hardwire/bypass.

When mine did that, the tone ring with actuator had to be replaced.
