4th gen winch clutch?

Hi,
I have a 4th gen winch installed on a 3rd gen, no matter how far I rotate (3 o'clock, 6 o'clock or 9 o'clock) the clutch lever it never disengages.
I have only used it a few times, but every time I have to run the line out.
I thought it was supposed to work by disengaging the clutch and I should be able to drag the cable out or am I missing something, this is my first winch so maybe a newbie question
Regards,

Yes it should disengage. When you rotate the lever it should stop and be "disengaged".

Doesn't the third Gen require a reversed clutch?

I've used the crap out of mine and sometimes I have to bump it to get the lever to fully swing to disengage. Try bumping it out, like unwinding with the controller and then try it. The lever should rotate a full 180 degrees.

It may be grease that's gotten thick and hard from non-use. If Will's idea doesn't work for you, try moving the lever into the disengage position and tie off to an immovable object, like a large tree, then put your truck in reverse and just gently nudge against the cable to see if applying more than human force against it will get it to come free. If that doesn't work, it may be time for disassembly and inspection. Good luck!

Could use the 4th gen winch as long it is mounted with the motor on the pass side. but might require reclocking the clutch end of the housing. would be nice to see pics of what we are trying to diagnose. Should still freewheel if clutch is working though.
