DIY bumpers
Anyone of you guys look into one of those weld your own bumper kits? Out the door price of one I saw was about $400. Seems like a good option, maybe? You could even possibly buy a welder and a diy kit for cheaper than some bumpers.... just thinking

I did Thurens rear bumper kit. It's pretty slick. If you can weld and have more time than money it's a no brainer. What bumper are you looking at?

Re: DIY bumpers
I saw an add in a magazine for a company call MOVE Bumpers. Comes out to bout 470 with a winch mount.

Re: DIY bumpers
The Move bumpers are pretty thin. Ryan that works here has one on his 06 Mega Cab, it fits well and everything but you can pick the whole bumper up with one hand easily. We reinforced it a bit because it was flexing pretty noticeably. Definitely not as strong as I'm used to seeing. Maybe the winch mount version is stronger. It would have to be, I don't think Ryan's would hold a winch without sagging in the middle before we added more plating.

Well I would just check them out before ordering, that's all I'm saying. I think it's a good deal on a DIY kit, it just needs beefed up if you are going to use the bumper. And maybe the winch version is better, I'm not sure. If nothing else, it would be a good base to beef up on your own. Adding gussets is easy. We actually put a plate behind the Move logo, just doing that helped a lot. I don't like when you buy an off road bumper and they cut steel out of it for a logo, right where you need the most protection. haha
Sounds good on the arms though!
We have the bent arms in stock for 3rd and 4th gen trucks right now.

Re: DIY bumpers
Are you guys still selling the road rhino bumpers? They had a weld up kit too! Just saying the one I got from you guys has held up good. Hit some big rocks and trees and it's still in one piece lol.

They are the same thickness as all the other heavy duty aftermarket bumpers - 3/16". I put together a pair of their DIY bumpers for my truck. I ended up having my local shop cut and bend a new center section for the front so I could put the cut out for the winch where I wanted it. I also fabbed new mounts for the front that attach to the factory tow hook locations so I didn't have to relocate the winch. I can also now reach the engagement lever for the winch. I have less into my bumpers than some places wanted for shipping.

Those pictures look familiar, gotta give ya credit on those. I knew I had seen them somewhere.

Awesome pic! No we quit selling bumpers a couple of years ago, just too many headaches. When I started DOR we only sold other brands, didn't make any of our own stuff. Now we are kind of the opposite, we really only sell our own stuff and just a few brands we drop ship. It's much easier when I can control everything. The wait times on the bumpers and lack of tracking info just made for a lot of unhappy people and we didn't make that much on each sale. I still have those bumpers on two of my trucks and they've held up very well.05PWrockcrawler wrote:Are you guys still selling the road rhino bumpers? They had a weld up kit too! Wirebrush, the truck and bumpers look great! The one we have here is the same front bumper, just without the light bar. The one thing about metal is that you can have very different grades of 3/16" steel. Some brands use stronger stuff than others. I don't know enough about Move to say which is which, I didn't test it or anything. All I can say is what I dealt with on the one bumper we had here. And that particular one was not the standard grade of 3/16" that I order for things like gussets, tabs, brackets, etc. I get steel delivered on an 18 wheeler 3 days a week. And actually that was the complaint about early Road Rhino bumpers, compared to Road Armor. The steel was not as strong, even though both were 3/16". You could really tell when you compared the tow hook clevis before it got welded up, there was probably a 3 lb difference just in that one piece. There were people who folded the Road Rhino bumpers right in the middle, with the edges deforming and breaking headlights and fenders. I had a couple of really upset customers over that. Then Road Rhino switched to standard 3/16" HR and the shipping weight went up, and there were no more issues that I ever heard of. But like I said before, you can get the Move bumpers cheap enough and if you are welding them up anyway, it's no big deal to reinforce them a bit if you need to. Still not a bad deal at all. It's worth it just to have a pattern to mock up from. Especially when just getting the frame horns from anywhere is more than half the price of the bumper kits. I priced out the frame horns/bumper mounts from Road Rhino once and they were going to be like $250 or $300 for the pair. Road Armor was even more.
