When I ordered mine in '08. It sticker for $42,000. Chrysler had a $4,500 discount going on, I used my work discount of $4,500. That's $9,000 off of $42,000 for a total of $33,000. Trade in on my old Ram 1500 4x4 was $5,000. So I paid a total of $28,000 for my PW.

No, you still paid 33 for the truck.
The new ones are expensive. But, my salesman at our local dealer said he can get me a PW for 10k less than MSRP, so I guess thats a start

No. I still paid $28,000 for my PW. My trade in was not a lease vehicle, and it was paid off. So I had $5,000 in equity.

Exactly. It was $5000 of your money you put down on the truck. It wasnt someone elses. You paid for it.
If i trade my jeep in on a new pw, and my jeep is worth $30k, i owe nothing on it, and the pw is $50k, that dosnt mean i bought a new pw for $20k. Its still $50k.

Exactly. If you cursor through the pics, you can read something different for each one. They show the pw laramie at $64,745. Ram took the cake, with their $80,000 laramie limited. Super duty was over $70k.

The price of new model year vehicles relative to what we earn these days just blows me away. Does Chrysler financial offer a mortgage for them?

You can get auto loans for 84 months (7 yrs). I bet shortly you could get a loan for 96 months (8 yrs). My motorhome is financed like a home. 30 yrs mortgage.

No kidding. A 5 year loan on a new truck without putting any money down would be like $1000 a month. And that is why they are now offering 7 year loans. Like rusty said, they are probably gonna have 9 or 10 year auto loans available soon enough.
Times are changing.

There has to be a break point where buyers aren't willing to go there anymore. On an 8-10 year loan you would be underwater loan/vehicle value for most if not all of the life of the loan. A ten year old unit is not going have much equity left once you pay it off. The times they are changing indeed.

Even though mines paid for, I'm still making the payment to a savings account specifically for the next truck.

I dono. I think its all relative. Look at 10 year old vehicles with 150k miles... some are still worth $20k.

That's a good idea. MY PW is almost paid off, and I am going to have it for a very, very long time.
The Sticker on my 10' was $52,000 and change. The only option it doesn't have is a block heater and I paid $2800 for the Lifetime Max Care warranty. I think I got $10,500.00 for my trade and I bought mine used with around 26,000 miles. I was planning on ordering a new 2012 ST model and sometimes wish I would have because Silver wasn't my first choice for color (it's a bitch to match). I sure enjoy the little perks like sunroof, electric sliding rear window, navigation, etc.
The price of some of these new pickups is just insane. They are a cadillac with a box.

Ram makes three PW trim levels. I could have bought a Tradesman PW for less than $40K. I'm not sure where the confusion lies, the big three have offered $60K+ trucks for the last 10 or 15 years. Most are diesel but the PW option is almost as much as the diesel option.

When I bought my '08. The PW option was $6,200. and a diesel was a $6,600 option.

Pw package is closer to $7500-8000 now depending on model, and cummins upgrade is pretty much $9000.

oly - There are many brand-new Power Wagons's listed on-line for $10k off of MSRP (Laramie and SLT's). I think you could maybe get another $4-$5k off if you really worked for it and/or got an employee family/friends number. Best deal I have found so far (for me) was a used 2014 with 24k miles for just under $40k. This was a loaded Laramie with ramboxes and most other options at a no-name used car dealer - they had it for sale for about 3 months but I could not get there due to hip surgery & recovery. Will have to keep shopping - that is part of the fun!
As far as the longer term loan and being "underwater" the trick is to put $10k or more down and/or get the best interest rate you can. If the interest rate is low enough and a person plans to keep the vehicle well after it is paid off it really doesn't matter if they are theoretically "underwater" for most of the loan.

If memory serves me correctly, my 2012 stickered for around $53,000 but I know I didn't pay anywhere near that. What really killed me was I paid $28,000 for my 2004 HD Hemi when it was new. Had I waited one more year I would have bought a 2005 Power Wagon, and I'd still have that SOB. I guess the plus is I paid my 2012 off last year, and it still only has less than 35,000 miles on it right now. This thing should last me a long time...I hope...maybe...

Thanks for the info yooper. Yeah, I have been searching online for almost two years now. Most listings (that actually have a price that is not just the MSRP number) are pretty much 10 grand lower than the MSRP. So no, I wasnt too flabbergasted when he told me that he could get me one for 10 grand below MSRP... but again, its better than starting at full MSPR hahahah.
The only scary part about being "underwater" throughout your loan (or should I say mortgage!) even if you plan on keeping it long after the term is over, is if the vehicle is totaled. Nothing worse than totaling a vehicle and having to continue paying for it after the insurance reimburses you for what its worth. Of course, that is why they sell GAP insurance now also.
