Has anyone replaced steering box

Just replaced my whole front steering, again, with the upgraded mopar kit. Tie rod, draglink, stabilizer, pitman arm and just had it aligned. I thought my drivers bj's were done as I can pry between knuckle and ujoint and see fair amount of play. When I had it aligned they said bj's are still ok. Drove it home and still shutters and vibrates. I jacked it up, checked it with a buddy and still feel same play in Draglink ànd can feel in tie rods. Looks like it's coming from steering box. Has anyone replaced the steering box, if, so any recommendations on brands. I've seen a few different ones from various vendors.

The Borgeson box is the big Dodge box, however it's checked over internally here in the US and it has a 3 year warranty. Mopar box is assembled in China and just sent to dealerships, and it has a one year warranty. I never have understood why anybody would buy more Mopar parts to fix Mopar problems. If they were much less money, then I guess it might make sense, but the prices are all similar.

The bad thing is that if you have a 2009-current truck, Mopar boxes are basically all you can get. But those of us with 3rd gens are good. I put the older Borgeson box on my 2005 a few years ago, it's always had 37" and now 41" tires on it. It's still tight. My 2nd gen got one back in 2010 and it steers 47" tires and is still tight. They are good boxes.

I replaced my '08 box with a PSC box drilled for hydro-assist. My first box failed on my first trip to Moab. It wouldn't turn left. To turn left, I had to turn right a little then snap the steering wheel to the left for it to move. That was a fun 1,800 mile drive home. If I had to do it again. I would get a box from DOR.

Interesting info Danny. It's nice borgeson is doing that now, it's news to me. In the last 4 or 5 years My 09 has been through 1 oem gear 2 redheads one with a broken sector shaft, and an older style borgeson Delphi unit I think I may have bought from you years ago. I've ended up buying a new dodge box then having Howe steering blueprint it and port for ram assist as well as modify the internal stops.

I just installed a redhead box on my 06 CDT. It's a nice upgrade from the 10 year old OEM box. The truck is still not as stable on the road as I would like, maybe a track bar is next.

I haven't read this entire thread but I have changed my steering box 7 times. I wheel my truck a lot and rock crawl with it. My experience with dodge steering boxes is that each one is slightly different from each another dodge steering box. The way I see it is whoever oversees the steering engineering at dodge has been using some wrong force numbers. With that being said, If you stay at stock tire size, put on a sector shaft steering brace and follow all the recalls then you should be in good shape. If you step up to 35"s and rock crawl with front locked then the sector shaft will eventually twist in half on the older small steering box (I've done it twice). Even then it'll last a good 25-30 offroad weekends. I have had my current steering box for about 2 years now, it is the larger/newer box but I haven't been without hydro assist for about 7-8 years now so I can't really say its a great upgrade. The hydrolic ram is always so strong it masks any problems that may exist with the steering box.

I have the upgraded mopar box and I have changed out everything like you have, but I don't have a shake I just go through power steering pumps about every two months. I am looking into upgrading to the pcs hydraulic assist kit. I have heard good things about the borgeson box also.

I replaced mine with the Borgeson and Borgeson's steering shaft about 6 months ago. I'm not quite sure if its a bad box or what, but I can't get it tightened where I'd like. There is an adjusting screw on the top, and after a talk with Borgeson (sent them a video of the amount of play before it actually touches the gears inside), they quickly offered up a RMA, but also suggested tightening that screw ever so slightly at a time, so I've been doing that. I at one point I supposed tightened too tight because it would "catch" just right of center without any steering pump assist, and it would take a lot of force to continue turning the wheels left or right at that catch point. With the engine running I could turn it easy but you'd still feel the catch, and lets say I was taking a right turn and let the steering try to return to center when I'm straight on a road, that catch was enough to not let it return to center on its own. So, I have been slowly backing the screw up again and currently the catch is just barely there, but now the steering is getting back to that wrong amount of play. So, I'm leaning towards it being just a bad manufactured box, something didn't take right on the assembly line or something. The hard part for me is, taking my truck out of service for a week or two while I'd send their box to them and get another one sent back to re-install and try again. I hate to procrastinate but I suppose with a 3-year warranty on it, I can wait until summer where I can ride my motorcycle to work every day so I can have my truck out of service.

Yeah, that is the part that is unacceptable to me----taking the truck out of service, over & over again, to fix something that should not be going bad with a stock set up. $50k+ & then another 10-20k to fix the factory fuck-ups. This is what turns people to foreign vehicles. I mean, REALLY, they have been making trucks for 100 years, you would think they would have it right by now, especially with something as important as steering. SAD

I had my buddy(mechanic) come with me for a ride. He doesn't think it's my box. There is a bit of play in it, not alot. Truck doesn't wander. He thinks my shimmy is probably from tires. I noticed trackbar on axle end has play so addressing that. My upper(intermediate)shaft has play so probably replacing that too. Did these things ever steer/ride right from the factory? I know I have alot of miles on it but seeing guys on here with newer ones having issues is making me want to keep mine.

theres not to many that don't have issues, but they put all these recalls out for front end work but wont honor it if you have any aftermarket parts. All I had was the fox steering stabilizer and they wouldn't fix any of the recalls
