General grabber finally dot 37"!!!

Post by nts007 » Sun Mar 06, 2016 12:47 am

Finally they released the general grabber in a 37" that is dot legal. I had a set of 35" and between 2 vehicles they have run 130k km and still have enough tread to finish a summer. These were the best gravel loose terrain tire I have ever run. And they were solid in mud as they are a fairly good flotation tire. Monday morning I'm makin a call to see how and when I can get them. Figured I'd share. Since I'm excited lol apparently it was released in October and I missed the news.

The official General Grabber Page only lists up to 35's. However, there is a news post on their website from last October announcing the availability of 37" Grabbers for 17, 18 and 20" wheels. 4WheelParts has them listed for 17, 18 and 20" wheels as well. 37x12.5R20's are $472.99 each :jawdrop:.

Anyone who has experience with these, care to share your experience with them? How do they perform on the dry or wet pavement, mud, dirt, snow/ice, etc. I don't imagine they'd be very good on ice due to a lack of siping. nts007 mentioned them being great in the loose stuff, as I would expect, but how do they perform everywhere else?

Scroll down a bit. I did a review on them
Best summer traction tire I've used. Do not use for winter. Horrible on ice and not great in snow due to harder compound. Very long lifespan. They wear like train wheels

Thanks for the link! I wont need new tires for a while, mine have quite a bit of tread left and so far have performed pretty well. Where I live and plan on traveling most of the back-roads are dirt, so the Grabbers are lookin' like a solid choice. Though I would definitely need a good set of winter tires to go along with them, as we have snow/ice for 4-5 months.

How good are they on wet pavement?

How well do they grip on the rocks? Aired down?

The Cooper S/T MAXX is supposed to be a great all-around tire as well, tough choice.

We have 6-7 months of winter here. Seems like more sometimes. They worked awesome on wet. No hydro planing. I put a set of St maxx on wife's jeep for a 1 tire for all studded too.
I've never had them on rocks but from what I've read they conform very well aired down. Flat out they are very very tough. Had a 4" spike drill into one of them. It went into the tread block and stuck about 1/4" in. Didn't punch any deeper. Happened at the garbage dump of all places. Go figure. I only seen it cause it was standing straight up on the top of the tire.
I plan on picking up a set of these for this summer as soon as it stops getting below freezing now that they are in a 37. I really missed them. The confidence you get on the gravel roads is surprising. You notice the difference the min you switch to something else and drive the same road. How well they wear makes it worth it alone. My dad is trying to get them bald. Bets are that they should make 160k km. bout 100k miles. But they might conk out a bit sooner. On a hemi they might last even longer.

Personally I dislike toyos compound. Now I havent used their mt but their at extreme wears out very quickly and gravel destroys it easily. And for 1900bucks I expected more outta them. The general compound from my experience is much better. For example starting at 18/32" depth they have about 7-8/32 on them right now and they have 130k km. toyos never last that long.

I'm almost tempted to get these now since they have really good off road traction and wear like iron on road. I live where we get ice amd snow about 5 months a year but I plan on getting studded Duratracs for my factory rims for winter. Only downside is they're $480 a piece compared to $355 for the STT Pros, but if you can get double the mileage that's worth the extra $125.

Oh good I'm not the only one who's had experience with them. And has been waiting for a real size to come out lol

Surprisingly the tread depth doesn't hinder muck traction. They really float and self clean well. I've never done deep mud but turned up fields after a heavy rain didn't stop me.

Once I know when I can get these tires I will be going back to winter/summer sets. Right now I'm running the hankooks year round. I will keep the hankooks for winter unless I wear them out. Il likely run the grabbers summer tan cooper St maxx studded for winter. Or maybe another set of hankooks for winter. We will see if general tire ever gets back to me. I mean continental tire.

Have you guys read the specs ? Max psi 50 ??? Overall dia 35.9" ??? Seems off spec to me for a tire of that claimed size, yet the max weight is 3525 lbs & they are Load Range D ???
