Check the position of your free spool lever.

I've looked and never found it. I know usually they are on top and I can't feel one up there. Funny thing is I called dealer and asked them and he was I'm not sure on that most power wagons don't come with a winch. I told ok sir you have a good day I'll call somewhere else.

It's through the bumper to the right between the rollers and the tow hook.

That bumper leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to getting to the winch. Found that out when I brought the 16 home and went to put the hook on the cable.

It's in there... Just really hard to get to... Its on the driver side on the top... Even harder to get to if you connect the winch hook to the driver side tow hook...

do you guys leave the winch in free spool or engaged when its tucked up and not in use?
If I start listing Mods I would have to change the list daily

Engaged with a touch of slack. I was told having it pulled tight was hard on the cable, and that made sense. I suspect if you left it in free spool you would end up with slack on the drum that could cause an issue when you went to use the winch. My experience is that the cable can wrap over itself if loose which can thwart pulling the cable out by hand.

^^^^^^ All of this! Free spool is only for pulling the rope out. You will end up with a tangled mess, and a damaged rope if you try to use it and wraps are piled on top of other wraps.

Hook the tow loop, suck the cable up just enough to take the slack out, but not tight. Leave the spool engaged.

X2 , I take out just enough to keep the hook from being loose on the tow hook.

I snug my Prolink up just enough to keep it from walking back and forth on the rollers and call it good.

For whatever reason, we find that on both the PW and the JKUR people seem to want to play with the winch when parked at public places. So the JK now has a cover over the winch to keep the clutch lever protected and the ProLink is pulled tight to the fairlead, and I keep the Safety Thimble tight on the PW. It's probably the same people that steal my vavle stem covers...

As fas as the cable or rope goes, I don't try to make it perfect when re-spooling it. I always try to use all of the line except for the last 8 wraps to maximize the pulling power, so it's all coming off the drum anyway.

Unless in a perfect straight on pull, it'll tend to favor one side. Once I'm done actually using it, I'll pull it all out minus the drum wrap, hook it to a pole or tree or something straight ahead, preferably on a slight incline, and winch the truck to the anchor with it in neutral to get it wound back evenly and tight. You never know when or if you'll need a short pull. I run synthetic rope so its not as bad but a crossed up wire rope (like the factory one) can ruin it in one pull in the right scenario.

I've used two snatch blocks to shorten the line, or redirect the pull to a farther attachment point. I always try to keep it on the last wrap.
