Snorkel WITH Cold Air Intake

Post by dodgeman324 » Wed Dec 30, 2015 9:22 am

Has anyone ever thought up, or researched ideas on a snorkel WITH a Cold Air Intake already installed? I have the AFE Cold Air Intake Kit on my 3rd Gen, and I love it, but now I'm wanting to raise my intake to avoid water induction on my occasional mud runs, and puddle bashing. I know the basic idea of a snorkel, but just am having trouble brainstorming the process to seal the Filter box, air tubing, and then running a snorkel up to the roof line. Perhaps I could go ahead and buy a 3rd Gen snorkel kit, and then maybe I'd have some fabrication to do to get it to fit into the CAI filter box, which sits exactly in the same spot as the OEM airbox, it's just not a fully sealed box anymore, when the hood is open, the top is open to access the filter. I would somehow need to close off the top, and make it watertight all the way around, right? But, the filter can stay there, correct, I'd just need to leave a good sized hole for the snorkel intake, to the outside of the fender? Or is it better to have an air filter up near the opening to the snorkel at the roofline, and then pipe the tubing directly to the intake manifold? Anyways, I'm just pondering and asking if anyone else has seen or done a snorkel kit WITH an already installed CAI.

You should look through my build thread for ideas. Been running a Airaid cai with a snorkel since 2011.

Oh yes, thanks for that link, I actually remember reading that a long time ago. Did you ever figure out your plan on closing off the top of the Airraid box? I know mine seals up pretty good too when the hood is closed, but I wouldn't say it is sealed enough to keep water out that is above hood level, so I will definitely want to fully seal the CAI box. Oh, and which brand snorkel is it? I see a Kangaroo on it.

That reminds me, Rusty you never did get back with me about how the snorkel blocks your view to the right.

Any pictures of that view would be great too.

What you could do is get a piece of thin aluminum sheet. Cut it to size and shape of the opening. Then dust tape it to seal it. Then you can remove the duct tape to service the filter.

So now that you stole the elbow from the neighbours toilet drain do you notice an improvement in performance!! Jk
It obviously works very well for you. Did you water seal it all up then? Glue it and also is there a rubber seal on the airbox. I know it is sealed but how

Yes the box is completely...water resistant. I would trust it in very deep water, but it'll do fine in anything that you would actually drive through. There is a rubber seal on the volant airbox and I put a piece of the black plastic over all the holes in the bottom of the box then sealed them with mastic and screwed then all together.

Initially I saw an increase in MPG and thought I could see/feel an improvement in performance but it could just be the badass look ...
