4wd LO acting funky

So when I try to shift into 4 LO it sounds like when you shift without pushing the clutch. It will still engage and it only sounds like that every once in a while. But I'm kinda worried. Has this happened to anyone? Oh and sometimes when 4LO is engaged sometimes the 4WD light on the dash doesn't come on.

To me it sounds like your linkage may have started slipping a little bit to get it "out of alignment". Basically, it seems like perhaps when it is sitting in 4Hi for example, it is barely at the point to go to neutral or 2HI, so when shifting to 4LO, it either isn't accurately pushing into, or going too far. Hard to explain, but that's my thought. I remember a post a couple months back about someones transfer case popping out of 2HI or 4HI over bumps, and they just needed to adjust the nut on the linkage to get it fixed.

Okay that makes sense. We use the same linkage set up on the robots I work on. I should be able to look at it and tell if it is wonky or not

You do. I found it is best if you are just barely rolling and go straight from 2hi to 4 low without pausing, just keep pushing until you hear it clunk. If you pause in neutral it makes it kind of a pain to get into 4 low but that might just be me.

on my 2004 (not PW) 2500, I have found that transmission must be in neutral to shift into 4-low. I usually come to a complete stop - it has been working well; haven't tried the barely rolling trick. I do have the lever on floor for 4LO, N, 2HI, 4HI. I have been using 4LO almost all the time I go in the woods lately; I like the throttle response/control much better.
Trucks: 2003 4x4 Dodge 3/4 ton, 1972 4x4 Ford 3/4 ton (factory hi-boy), shopping for new Power Wagon (maybe 2024?)

Same here, it will go in 4lo in drive but it likes it much better with the tranny in neutral, I use a single swift motion like I'm sneaking up on it and then attack it. If you monkey around with it, it will act stupid.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

From the manualShifting Procedure – Manually Shifted Transfer Case
2H ⇔ 4H
Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the vehicle stopped or in motion. If the vehicle is in motion, shifts can be made up to 55 mph (88 km/h). With the vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/ disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelera- tor pedal after completing the shift. Apply a constant force when shifting the transfer case lever.
2HOr4H⇔4L
With the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transmission into NEUTRAL. While the vehicle is coasting at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transfer case lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause in transfer case NEUTRAL.
NOTE:
• Pausing in transfer case NEUTRAL in vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission may require shutting the engine OFF to avoid gear clash while completing the shift. If difficulty occurs, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL, hold foot on brake, and turn the engine OFF. Make shift to the desired mode.
• Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the vehicle completely stopped, however difficulty may occur due to the mating clutch teeth not being properly aligned. Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth alignment and shift completion to occur. The preferred method is with the vehicle rolling 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4L with the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h).
• Do not attempt to shift into or from 4L while the transmission is in gear.

Maybe I am not doing it right. I completely stop the truck and put it in neutral. Then shift it into 4LO. I do kinda pause in the nuetral position on the 4WD. Maybe I just need to slam it in

With mine. I found out if I'm moving about 1 mph. Put the tranny in neutral, the transfer case will pop into low most of the time.

I do pretty much the same thing as rusty. I could be wrong but doesn't our drivers manual say we should drift, tranny in neutral then go from 2H to 4LO?

Yep. Goes in smoothly this way. You will get gear clash if you are stopped, not in neutral, or most other methods.
