Mandated Buy Back ordered for Fiat/Chrysler

Post by MOPARManiac » Mon Jul 27, 2015 8:53 am

Anybody else see this? It looks like it will cover Powerwagons, I guess I thought the recall last year fixed the issue?

Interesting. I'll be honest though, there isn't another truck out there I like as much as my truck. Plus the agreement is the purchase price minus depreciation, so all of us are going to lose money, especially if we've done any mods. I'm just going to keep my truck and hope the airbag doesn't go off for no reason under a different recall.

I think the airbag issue is separate from the buy back, or at least could be separate. My understanding is the buyback was related to steering issues. You might be able to still get the airbag addressed by itself.

My steering was supposedly fixed under the recall last year, I bet mine has been removed from the list...

Its a steering recall. Issue is some of the previous "fixes" did not actually resolve the problem; i.e. there is no fix.

My question becomes - if I don't allow them to buy back my truck and the steering goes resulting in me causing an accident, am I now personally liable?

I would think so, insurance company may drop as well. Could be a down hill slide...

What it comes down to really is that no manufacturer is perfect hell look at the frame recall Toyota did for awhile!! lol I have owned nothing but Dodge trucks from my 85 Ramcharger to my 2005 Power Wagon none of them have ever given me an issue. Kept up on maintenance and that was it. and the airbag issue is indeed separate.... It's on the producer end not Mopar... Same recall happened to Honda back in October.

Isn't there two airbag recall's? One is for shrapnel, and the other stated that the air bag could deploy for no warning.

I wouldn't think there would be two air bag recalls, but apparently I was wrong too. I already had the front end fixed so the buy back doesn't apply to me so the buy back doesn't apply to me, and I'm ok with that. I can't see myself driving anything other than a Power Wagon. I just hope my air bag doesn't surprise me anytime soon.

Toyota's buyback was 150% of excellent condition book value regardless of condition.

Wonder how this will work for Dodge.

Called my State Farm agent to see if they had an answer on keeping a truck after this type of buyback. They don't know yet what their position will be on it. The potential liability for them or any other insurance company is huge. If they drop you for cause, good luck getting insurance elsewhere.

Shit- never thought about how insurance would be effected by this. I was more thinking about how resale or trade values were going to be effected by this. The only plus is only one manufacturer makes a vehicle like the Power Wagon, so hopefully we won't take too much of a hit. I have way too much money into my truck already to think about a buy back right now (if I was interested in one).

Buyback would cover 2008-2012 P.W.'s it would seem.

It says they can repair them and RESELL after repair. If that is the case it would seem insurance wouldn't be an issue.

The problem is if you elect to keep the vehicle, is it roadworthy according to the insurance company? They don't like risks.

Fiat Chrysler said more than 60 percent of the trucks already have been fixed, and the company is allowed to repair and resell the trucks it buys back

Will this "repair and resell" nudge down what new trucks sell for in 2016?

Well this is interesting. Have to see if I get a notice in the mail. Does this only effect the trucks with a documented steering issue?

From what I just saw on the news and read on a news site, it's a steering related issue that can cause Loss of control but we can opt to have repaired if we choose or sell the truck back. From what it says, they'll buy it back at purchase price minus depreciation but they can then repair the issues and re-sell the trucks. It's supposed to be 08-2012 Ram 2500,3500,4500 and 5500 4X4 trucks.

I'm going to speak to my local dealer tomorrow that did the recall repair on my PW last year. From what I'm reading if we had the recall done (2nd go round) as that was supposed to be a fix for the issue. If I remember right the first go round was not an acceptable fix and that was the reason why the recall took so long. I think that if the recall was completed then there should be no reason for insurance not to cover our vehicle. We shall see, but I'm not giving up my 2010 at this point.
