Coil springs. Again

Post by nts007 » Tue Jun 23, 2015 5:14 pm

So I have been none too happy with my Carli springs as some of you know. Supposed to be a 3" kit and I only am 2.25" ish over stock. I've been told I'm crazy. I'm tired of the ride from these as I hit the hard coil rate going over a stick. Well I just found a post on dtx that made my decision. Tonight I am ordering thuren coils. Snapshot of the post below

I've had my Thuren coils on for two weeks now and so far I'm liking them a lot. I haven't tested the full compress rate yet as I'm waiting on my globally back-ordered Bilsteins to arrive before taking her wheeling again, but on the highway with crappy Superlift shocks, I can still tell I like the spring rate. I do see yours is a diesel, and mine are his Hemi coils, but I would think both are properly matched for our weights.

I'm only annoyed because this was a known issue for the 03-09 coils back in 2012. If I had found this earlier I wouldn't have bought them. Lesson learned

I've been told that thuren has a softer overall spring rate than carli. Stiffer than the pw by a little. Originally I kept thinking that my Carli coils were for a hemi but they aren't. Funny thing we have a 99 dually with a 6" superlift and it rides a ton smoother. Go figure

Neal,

That was my post on DTX.

I was explaining that the Carli 3rd Gen (03-09) coils only gave the heavier 4th Gen trucks around 2.5" of lift as opposed to the 2.75" of average lift that they gave to most 3rd Gens. So Sage made the expensive decision to develop a 4th Gen specific coil. This has nothing to do with the 03-09 coils that they built. I was asking the poster what coils he was running because early on a lot of 4th Gen guys were running the 3rd Gen coils.

Fair enough George. If I took that out of context I apologize. The way I read it was that the 03-09 coils were only netting 2.5" over stock. But then the reason I only have 2.25" over stock makes even less sense. And why my coil is so crooked.

Not sure on the crooked part other than the coils may not be indexed correctly or you may have something going on with your isolators. It's pretty rare for the isolators to get damaged but the can dry rot over time and on high mile trucks they can split apart. At least the 03-12 isolators are better than the ones that Ram uses on the '14+ trucks. I've already heard of a few trucks that have split the upper front isolators.

When you get a chance take a measurement of the distance between the bottom lip of your front bump stop cup (the part that the bump stop plugs in to) down to the contact point on the axle. Do this on both sides when on flat ground with no load in the truck. That will give me a better idea of your true ride height.

Will do. I have been measuring from the top lip of the lower bucket and the roll of the upper. Checked it on mine and a stock 05 and stock 09 and I'm taller between 2 1/8" and 2 1/4 on the driver and 2 3/8 and 2 5/8 on the passenger. That's between the 3 trucks with the 05 being the slightly lower both diesel of course. I will measure it tomorrow from the bump stops to axle tube. I have a pretty good rake front to rear with the pw leaves In with the rear being higher. I do like the look of the stance though.

I also did check how the spring is clocked and it's the way Carli said with the logo out

Going from the lip of the bump stop to the axle point where they impact. Driver is 5 1/2" and passenger is 5 7/8. That's on flat ground. Empty truck.
