Forum Move Discussion Here

Post by ldgregory » Wed May 16, 2012 11:03 pm

Ok, so all of the folks I've talked to so far support the forum move. So I'm planning to go ahead with the move. What I'd like to discuss is how we do that and how we want this forum to function. I'd like to get it pretty much customized the way we want it before we start getting people en-masse to move.

Remember, for now, keep this private. I don't know what DT will do if they catch wind of this.

No problem. You just let me know anything you want me to do.

By the way, I got your PM, but I can't find a "reply", and it says I am not authorized to create a new PM to send you. Maybe there's a minimum set of activity required before I'm authorized. I looked around but didn't find anything that specified this.

What exactly is "the move" going to entail? Are we just talking about inviting guys over, or other, more elaborate content transfers of some sort? I know you had mentioned some possible platform compatibility issues with something like that.

Under the FAQ's, I found this about PM's:

I cannot send private messages!
There are three reasons for this; you are not registered and/or not logged on, the board administrator has disabled private messaging for the entire board, or the board administrator has prevented you from sending messages. Contact a board administrator for more information.

Try it now. PMs are allowed board wide, but I think your newly registered user group permissions didn't allow it.

That's a good question. Worst case, it's inviting everyone over. Best case, DT dumps the database for the Power Wagon Forums for me and I can import those in. I doubt they'll do the latter. Not to mention the posts would be discombobulated because the users who posted them don't exist here yet. So, my thinking is more along the lines of we take the really important posts and either recreate them here or link to them. Like the How-To thread which is basically a thread full of links to other threads on fixes and how-tos.

I'm also thinking of redoing the Power Wagon's Member club list and having people match it to their PowerWagonRegistry.org profile number. Don't know if people would get upset if their profile number is higher than their number on DT though. One of the things to discuss and think about.

I really wish I'd kind of done this from the get-go instead of convincing DT to create a forum for us, but that's water under the bridge. I've started contacting some of the long time forum members and the more active ones to come here and help figure this out. Hopefully they'll start showing up soon.

I'd like to get all the kinks worked out, like the post moderation, before we do a mass invite.

Plus it allows you to post attachments from your smart phone, which is really cool.

Yep, I'm reviewing mobile plugins as well. Tapatalk is great, I've got it on my iPhone, but the app costs money. I'm trying to see if one exists where the plugin and the apps are free. If not, I'll do Tapatalk.

I'm also looking at different styles for the board. I'm not too enamoured of this style because there's a whole lot of wasted space. I'll be posting a poll probably this evening with the top four or five I like and we'll institute the one with the most votes. But, there's nothing saying I can't load multiple styles and you can choose the one you like in your profile settings.

I was pretty damn impressed at how easy it was to set up. The only downside is they have a strict policy against against pornography, so I deleted the NSFW topic.

Ok, a project I did many, many years ago is going to come in handy. I've got a massive collection of smileys that we're going to have to pick through and decide which ones to make available to forum posts.

What sort of custom fields do we want on user profiles? Something about their truck, maybe a place to put the link to their PowerWagonRegistry.org profile for their truck.

Post by ldgregory » Sat May 19, 2012 8:17 pm

Trying to figure out the best way to get the word out when we're ready. I've been discreetly PM'ing or emailing the more active and long time folks about coming over and discussing things. Hopefully they'll find the time to come over and help figure out the migration strategy. At any rate, Once we're ready to rock and roll, I'm willing to post a thread message about moving. My debate is whether to give DT a heads up first and ask for permission or not. If I ask for permission and they say no, then I'm not sure where to go from there. If I don't and just post, they may delete the posts and ban me, which since I'm all in for moving here, is fine with me, but then it falls to you guys to continue getting the word out via PM and email.

Some of the things I want to happen before we drop the hammer on this is to get some threads going (some of the people I've PM'd are keepers of some of the long time threads and seeing what we can do to replicate them here) and to get the forum rules completed. The good news on the latter is that there aren't going to be many rules so it'll be a short thing. Would like some input from you all on what we should absolutely have in the rules. I'm thinking stuff like if you're selling something and people want it here, then go for it (locker bypasses, shirts, hoodies, stickers etc.) If you're a vendor and you want to sell something, long as you're post is relevant to the issue at hand fine, but if people are talking sway bar issues and you're jumping in trying to sell air fresheners, you're gonna get yourself banned. Normal stuff like being civil to each other, not posting pornographic images (that's due to the Tapatalk license unfortunately) etc.

I would say to give them a heads up, although I am willing to bet they are not going to be too fond of the idea. Either way, I will help with getting people to switch over, whether you get banned or not. Just let me know when you want me to get started.

What threads do we want to start replicating?

As far as rules, I think you've just about got it right already. The main reason for the migration, is to do away with all the bullshit. Civility toward each other, I believe is the biggest thing.

Not yet don't do it by posting it. I'm going to start copying alot of the posts and dont want any deletes or bans.

Here's my thought. What we could do first is do it by text to the ones we know and they will then do the same to others that they know and it would spread. After that it can be done by the rest of us and others to do it by pm or what not.
