Power Wagon Mudding

Post by Wildcat1 » Sat Mar 21, 2015 9:33 pm

So I am like a lot of people who don't have or need a Power Wagon, I just want one! I have a 2008 1500 Megacab 4x4 and it does everything I need so far. Main thing I do is go to atv parks and ride my atv but sometimes the roads and parking lots are pretty bad but not enough to get me stuck. A Power Wagon is an awesome truck but I was curious how the lockers work when in muddy situations. If you have to hit a muddy hole with a lot of throttle is that going to grenade the diff's like it can on some atv's? I think the sway bay reconnects above 18 mph just wonder how diff's hold up at higher mph.

In stock form , the power wagon is limited to low range in regards to diff lock. I've never heard of anyone grenading a diff in mud. It is more likely to happen on hard ground if you' re forcing it to turn. The diffs are very tough. If you want diff lock in 4 hi, you have to wire up a smart bar bypass circuit. There is a kit sold by one of the members that is plug and play. This kit also allows rear diff lock in 2wd and they lock in much quicker. I have this kit and like it very much
2013 Laramie, m young locker bypass, 315/70/17 Duratracks, synthetic winch rope and factor 55 safety thimble, warn wireless remote, Carli long travel air bags. Yoke snatch block, Crosby shackles and an assortment of ropes, straps and slings.

2015 PW.

Lockers in 4low only. Great for crawling. I want them in 4high, but not sure if I want the warranty issues if dealers get stupid.

Also, I do mostly technical trail crawling anyway. I'm not much of a muck hole freak aside from work. If the oil lease is bad enough to need a high speed run at a hole, I'll wait for a Commander to haul me out. (only happened to me once before. Epic 5 hours to move my truck 2km)

As far as the sway bar? Why do you need it to disconnect in a mud? That would solve? Sway bar helps flex, not bogging.

I bought the PW as a great choice for a factory truck that has what I need. Great work capability in bad field conditions in the oilfield, and a great play truck to get out and explore the mountains in Alberta and BC. (Moab soon!)

In all actuality, when in mud, usually both fronts spin even when not locked-----unless one tire has more traction than the other. I have done that personally & had gobs of mud flying up & landing on the hood/w-shield & roof, from both front tires without lockers locked. Because my ground speed was only 3 mph or so, i figured it was not from going fast & mud was flying from spinning tires. I was turning the wheel left & right a little while doing that.

4 Hi & locked would be great for sand & snow. I would love 2wd Lo for backing my camper into some spots for sure. Now i use 4 Lo & make lots of short turns going forward & back a lot, so as not to bind it up so bad on hard packed stone & blacktop. Doing that is a LOT easier on the clutch with my manual.

Wouldn't need sway bar disconnected in mud but some of the holes are rutted on one side or the other so having more flex would be helpful. I forgot about lockers only working in 4lo. I'm sure I could get to most places I need to be in 4hi, I just like all the features the Power Wagon has compared to a regular 2500 4x4. Hopefully I will get one someday. There is one on a lot close to me but they have more of the 6.4 Hemi 4x4's with the 3.73 gears and they are more willing to deal on them than the Power Wagon. I'm sure the regular 2500 would work but it's still not a Power Wagon!

I've been mudding twice now with my PW. It tears up every mud hole I've driven into. It is unstoppable in the mud in 4-HI with front/rear locked, with some good mudding tires of course

Do you have the bypass so you can use lockers in 4hi?

Yea the guy I bought the truck from already had the lockers hardwired with aftermarket switches. They work very well.

Yep, with a locker bypass mod, the PW ups it's game 10 fold. 8-)

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Your power wagon will tear up any mud hole you go into. So much fun. I've been mudding with mine a handful of times now, could not get it stuck!

I do a lot of bogs and runs, in a different truck. I strongly recommend low range

If you break the crust on a dry lake bed with chocolate pudding underneath, you will get stuck and it's a bitch to get out...

HA! I stumbled on pictures of when I sunk mine on 35's a few years back. I drove through the same spot the day before, appeared hard enough. I was creeping along looking out at the water and felt the front get a little soft. I reached down and pulled it into 4hi and hit the gas and we just went straight down to the frame and I could get out with the truck in gear and it would turn all 4 while idling. I called a couple of friends. One brought his wife's Duramax and they were on solid ground, I hooked the winch up and was pulling everything I hooked to back to me. Ended up calling in a favor to local tow truck. He had to bury the tee down in the ground to get a good hold to pull it out. It was dark when I got out and I didnt get a picture but it looked like you drug a bull dozier though there when we got it out.

They were Fierce MTs with probably 75% tread. Swamp boggers would've helped as fast as it went down. Was like chocolate pudding underneath. Haha

Yep. And a set of mud terrains would not have helped either. They would be all gummed up like that too.

Now, a set of 60" rice and cane tractor tires would have really done well in that particular scenario, though.

It's a Delta Pro with the ratchet lock that I picked up at Tractor Supply for $350. Tractor Supply put their badge on it and sold them much cheaper. Not sure if they have them now, that was 5 years ago. I still have the box and using it for temporary storage at the moment until I get my new house built. I took it off after 4 years of service switching to a full topper. It still works like it was brand new. They resist 1000lbs of force with the gear lock system, each time you close it, the ratchet turns so it will last much longer than a single striker. They also have a great seal, countless miles of dirt road travel and it has a very minimum amount of dust built up.

Delta Pro PAC1584002 is the part number

http://www.cpodeltatruckboxes.com/delta ... ruck-boxes

http://www.pickupspecialties.com/tool-b ... uminum.htm

Here's and angle showing the box better, don't look at those 35's hiding under the pudding
