DT Profab Steering Brace Question

Post by Ken G. » Mon Aug 06, 2012 9:23 pm

Just got one of these the other day, along with some Kore bump stops. Before I start taking things apart under there, I am wondering if I need additional parts to do the install. I have the Readylift 2" leveling kit on mine. In the DT instructions, it states that if the vehicle is lifted, "special additional parts" are needed to install the brace. Now I'm concerned if I will be able to get it on there with the kit that came, or if I have to order even more parts? Does the 2" leveling coil spacer fall under that category? I looked on DT Profab's site and did not see any "special part" for installing the brace on lifted trucks. Any insight from you guys out there with this brace on your PW? Appreciate any help. :patriot:

Unless I am missing something, the brace attaches to the frame at two points where the swaybar does and then to the steering gear box sector shaft extension nut. None of which change their position whether the truck is lifted or not. Suspension increases or decreases in height should not affect the installation as long as the steering box and the frame mount points stay the same. It could be a situation where the swaybar hits if it is too maxed out in a downward position? Maybe someone else who knows more will chime in. :ugeek:

New winch cable, Winch TPS bypass, Cardan joint grease zerk discovery. New front grille assembly. Magnesium Chloride under coating.

If you ever happen to see me running somewhere, you should start running too. :)

That's good SA....thanks. I hope you're right, and what you've written makes sense. I just saw that stuff written in the instructions and got a wee bit "skeered"....don't want to screw up my rig by trying to fix it so good that I break it. Hope some other :winchmob: folks chime in with any additional insight. Thanks again, Gunni.

Yeah, I saw that in their instructions when I got mine too. Worried me at first because I didn't install with any additional spacers, etc. But, after mine was all done it pretty much just maintained stock PW height even with all the additional weight on the front end so I quit worrying about it.

What others have said here makes sense, but maybe still worth a call to DT to ask them about the additional hardware.

I think they mean that the spacers are required when you have a drop pitman arm. The brace would interfere if you did.

Question from a nube- what is the DT Profab Steering Brace for?
It reinforces and strengthens the point at which the sector shaft coming out of the steering box connects to the pitman arm. Reduces flex, tightens up the steering feel a little and prolongs the life of the notoriously weak steering box, especially on the earlier 3G PWs. Basically, it reduces the leverage effect on the sector shaft by shortening the effective length of the shaft, and it gives you another grease point.

RTFM is widely used, especially in the IT field. That along with ID10T errors due to neglecting an RFTM. :D

I'll use that term, among others, only amongst colleagues but not customers, even though it applies 80% of the time.
