Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
So this ice storm has hit us in Oklahoma and I thought that my tires would take it pretty decently. Well they don't. I am so disappointed with BFG. I know that this isn't the only tire they make. I used to love BFG because I had a set of KM2's on one of my Cummins. So with my strong love of BFG I went and got the all terrain. I am so disappointed. Every time I push the throttle I am spinning like crazy. I know the low gears don't help, but I mean come on man!!!!! I am leaving for Anto Fagaste, Chile on the 8th of March and when I get back I need new tires. I'm wanting an MT. I'm thinking the Cooper discoverer stt. Any suggestions??

I've had those coopers before. Good tires but they wear pretty fast.

The best radial M/T on the market is the Goodyear MT/R.
That said, in ice like you were in, they, and pretty much any M/T other than the DuraTrac, will not do as well as something like the Toyo AT2 or any of the other new generation aggressive A/T's.

For straight up snow tire: http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Tr ... R-M-S.aspx But you will have to go down one size.
For M/T: I have these & are very happy with them. http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Tr ... R-STT.aspx We have so much snow here, that i have filled the back of my truck up to the roof 8x with the snow blower, taken it down the road & shoveled it off by a farmers field & while doing so, i drove into the ditch---twice today. I was able to drive out with no issues, 4Hi, 1st gear, no lockers. I bought them in Oct 2007. Took delivery of the PW in Nov 2007. So this is the 9th winter on them. They are a little over half worn. My truck has almost 37,000 miles on it. Tires are only on in winter or off roading.
Only you can decide what is right for you.

Duratrac. They really are good at almost everything you'd normally encounter + most off-road conditions.
We've got 12"+ snow in the last 7 days & I went pheasant hunting & had it some deep drifts & on some plowed slick dirt roads that I could barely walk on & had no problems at all w/ traction.

Re: Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
I love my hankooks. I deal with ice daily. And heavy snow. Deep snow, gravel. I once had a non studded set and winter highway was scary. Like most m/t tires. I gave these a shot again studded and I believe I have found my one tire.

Re: Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
I've never been a huge fan of the stock BFG's on my 2012. As soon as my pig hit's 30K these tires are gone! I don't have a lot of experience with M/T's, but after doing a ton of research I'm going to go with the Toyo Open Country A/T II because it's going to fit my needs the best.lastmanalliance wrote:So this ice storm has hit us in Oklahoma and I thought that my tires would take it pretty decently. Re: Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
If you think BFG AT's suck on ice and want a mud tire, you're really gonna be hating life. I have ran KM2's, Toyo MT's, Nitto Trails, the old MTR, Procomp Extreme MT.
Every MT on the planet (unless siped) sucks on ice and some are "ok" at best on snow. The more siping you have, the better the tire is in teh snow. But you also have to balance that with tread void too. They have to clean out. Toyo MT's have been the best for me in the snow. I'm running AT KO2's this winter and than switching back to Nitto or Toyo MT's in the Summer.

Re: Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
I have to disagree to a point. I ran toyo at2 extremes last winter and this winter my hankook mts which are studded. The hankooks are on par maybe better on ice tan the toyos and where the toyos would start to have a hard time in 5-6 inches of snow the hankooks have let me plow bumper deep and just chew. If you have ever read the canadian 4wd club mags with the snow wheeling you see that the interco irok is one of the most popular tires for snow.Timgco wrote:If you think BFG AT's suck on ice and want a mud tire, you're really gonna be hating life. Bfg km2s are not that great in the snow and are horrible on ice. What really suprised me is I see a lot of guys using nitto trail grapplers on ice. But I wouldn't risk that. In town they probablly use 4wheel to get around. But I can also tell that some of these guys spend 3-4 grand on their wheels and tires and they can't afford a safer second set for winter.
I will not argue that siping helps. When I got the hankooks i was prepared to sipe them if the studs wernt enough. I didn't have to. I trust them with my life and my family's all year round.

Re: Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
Of course a studded tire will beat anything else on ice and slippery stuff. Barring studs, heavy siping is your next best bet for winter tires. That's why the blizzak, the Toyo open country winters, etc perform so well. The more sipes, the more snow is picked up. Snow sticks to snow, which is why these tires work so well. Rubber does not stick to snow or ice. Hence the reason MT's suck on ice or packed snow. Studs are a different category altogether. They stick, because they punch into the ice. They give the best all around grip for winter conditions, plus, like nts007 points out, he can run a high void tread, which cuts into fresh snow and keeps him moving. Personally, when my BFG AT's are done, I'll either do the hankooks, or a set of duratracs, as they are both stud capable tires. Having said that, I'm still a fan of the BFG AT's for winter use. The key to them is pressure. As for longevity, I've never run them on a heavy truck, so I'm interested to see if they suck as much as everyone here says they do. I've run them for 20 years, and they're always my go to tire for winter use. And in Alberta, we get 6 months of winter!
One other thing I want to comment on was the spinning of tires in the snow. With a light ass end, and snow and ice, any tire is gonna spin. That's what 4 wheel drive is for. I know after a snow, around town, mines usually in 4x4, at least until they've run the plow and cleared the streets.

Re: Not impressed with my bfg TA KO's
I should point out that last winter (not this one) was the first year i ran something other than the bfg at for winter. I ran them on my 99 cummins, 06 3500, 06 powerwagon, 95 talon, and this 08 2500 when I first got it. They never let me down in in the last 12 years. They were the best compromise for winter and highway and driving through fields and just use. They hauled they pulled and they didn't put me into the ditch unless I was being stupid. Im not gonna jump on the bfg's because they never did me wrong. 1 bad tire out of 11-12 sets and bfg replaced all 4 tires for me no questions asked. The rubber was cracking between the treads and only had them on for 2 months. It was also wearing very prematurely. Since it was part of the same batch as the other 3 they replaced all of them. So I won't bash the atko. Is it the best tire? No. But it never let me down. Now I've found a tire that works better for me now. I will also say that I won't be buying toyo tires again after paying a premium for the at2 extreme and getting a horrible tread life and poor off road traction. And they are not very good in snow. But what doesn't work for me will work very well for someone else. And vice versa

There seems to be a lot of negative press on the Green Diamond Tires... And not sure I'd be willing to gamble on a retread for my PW.Will wrote:Have any of you northern folks tried the Green Diamond tires? Seems like they would be great to me up there....
