PW Saves

Post by ldgregory » Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:59 pm

Couldn't find an existing thread for this, so if someone doesn't pipe in with one that exists, we'll make this the official PW Saves thread.

So, at work and my wife calls about 2:30pm and says she was going to the gym and ran over some rocks in the parking lot and now her brand new Audi Q5 is stuck and damaged. I'm thinking she ran over a curb. So I drive out there and find her car literally beached like a whale on a landscaping rock.

So, with the tow truck on the way, put a 2-ton bottle jack under the rear and lifted it just enough to clear the rock and then put a tree saver strap around the rock and winched it out from the side so the flatbed tow truck could load it. It all went smooth as silk. Looks like several thousand dollars damage to the Q5 though.

Don't ask how she managed to do that as I'm still not quite clear on it myself. At least she wasn't hurt. She was completely high centered as you can see in the pic from the rear that the passenger tire wasn't on the ground.

Looks like that other rock flipped up and tagged her door for a little added insult to injury.

Oh, yeah. So while I was winching out the rock, we gathered a crowd and people were asking whether I'd done the winch mount myself, so I got to brag on the PWs as a stock truck and run through all her goodies!

Glad everyone is ok, but several thousand in damages for going over a rock? Hate to say it but the Audi seems like a POS. So much for being an SUV :)

It was a good sized rock, not PW worthy by any means though. I think the reason it caused so much carnage was twofold. One, the passenger side of the vehicle was on the pavement while the driver side was on the curbed in raised area which meant there was virtually zero clearance towards the passenger side for the rock to go under. Secondly, from where she popped the curb to get onto the raised area and that the rocks were in the middle of the raised area and where she came to rest which was at the opposite end of the raised area tells me she hit at some sort of speed. Probably between 10-15 MPH, probably closer to 15.

Put that with that rock catching right in front of the wheel well and destroying the auto leveler, muffler, fascia paneling, tagging the catalytic converter and the other rock putting a sizable dent in the door and the frame rail along the bottom, oh and also taking a chunk out of the front IFS arm on the driver side, I'm guessing about $5K.

Here's another pic showing where the rock crashed through the, ahem, and I say this tongue in cheek, plastic underbody, cough, armor.

I'm glad to hear she's ok.

Does the Audi have a backup camera? If not, maybe that would be a cool investment to help her backing up. I'm thinking of getting one for my wife's 2010 Ram. I have two cameras for my truck's upgraded RER, but I haven't installed them yet. I might put them on her truck.

I hope there's no frame damage, or it may not track straight, depending on the body shop's ability to straighten it.

There is an easy solution - buy HER a PW or a JKUR, and be done with it...

My wife drove over some spike strips once. The kind that are permanent in the road to keep you from backing up/going down one way road the wrong way. They also have 3-4 BIG signs saying NOT to go that way. She couldn't explain it either.

Did that have anything to do with choosing your screen name? :D

Sorry, I had to ask. Too coincidental.

I feel for you Leif. :( I remember when my wife used to do stuff like that. That's why she drove a Jeep GC. It goes anywhere.

Just think, in a couple of months. You will be able to :poke: her about it. Now you have something to use the next time you're in the dog house.

That's the thing. She wasn't backing up. She was driving forwards and just not paying attention I guess.

ACEMAN
Lucky for me she wasn't driving the P.W.($$$). Still cost about $150 for the new tire. I got lucky and only one tire got damaged.

The FLATTIRE name came from when I was joining DT and another forum about the same time I got a flat on my dune buggy. Cost about $25 bucks just to patch a puncture in the tread (if you live in California you will understand). I'm still pissed.

I carry one in each truck, wouldn't be in the boonies without one. If you don't carry an air source, also throw in a few cans of sealer/inflator that will put enough air into a patched tire to keep you moving. If you get a really big hole, just load it up with multiple plugs and hope the sealer does its job. In a pinch, it will also plug a sidewall for low speed use.

A few years ago we were in East Armpit Arizona and my cousin had a rented truck because his was in the shop. He got a flat and discovered that the rental company had not included a spare in his truck. Called the rental company and they told him to call for a tow. Called for a tow and the tow company just laughed at us because we were nowhere and it was near dark and they figured they wouldn't be able to find us. So I drove back into town in my truck and got a kit and then back out to the boonies and got the rental rolling again with a plug and my compressor. Have carried one ever since.
