Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
So I just got done washing my truck and low and behold there are a couple of yellow/orange spots in the paint that the de-icer they put on the road causes. The other problem is the white just doesn't clean up like it should this time of year unless I spend a ton of time on it, and it's hard to do that when it's cold outside.
All of the above gave me a thought that would be expensive, but might be kind of cool. I had this flash in my mind appear with all of the white paint being sprayed dark grey with Line-X to match the black I have on my rockers, bumpers, and my grill.
So... Is this a stupid idea?

I have thought about doing something similar. My only concern is weight. But i would sure live it for all the tree pin striping i get.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
All of it? Holy sh!t!!! What would be the cost? How about inside the fenders, where it really takes the abuse? And how would the fade, and the clean up be? I've seen it on older jeeps, blazers, and trucks, but never a new one!! It'd be cool!

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
The owner of my local Line X dealer sprayed his sons ENTIRE F-150 in Line X to take around to shows and such. It's his dd for work also. Said it costs $5,000 to do, and they do damn near everything including rims, all body panels, grille, door handles, bumpers and valances, etc. Looks really sweet, hasn't faded any either. I'll see if I can find a pic. I'd definitely go for it if you have the cash, I would do black on mine if I didn't have a laundry list of other stuff I still want, lol.

What's next bubble wrap...
In all honesty though, yeah that's a bit weird, but would be bullet proof, & would look cool. If it's bugging you that much, try the Opti-Coat pro. It will be FAR cheaper & has a lifetime warranty. It's a permanent ceramic clear coat that's 100x thicker than the factory coating.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
This picture answers my question- it just doesn't look right. Looks like on nicer days I'll just have to spend more time washing the truck, and I'll just keep detailing it as soon as winter is over.Stickman wrote:Those are the only good ones on their Facebook page.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
There are a couple of trucks local to me the flat brimmers have done completely in bedliner and they look like ASS.
I think also if you didn't get a perfect seal when you did it the rust might get under it and bubble it like crazy.

the idea is way cool. imagine 4wheeling without ever worrying about shrubs, branches, and sagebrush again. tight trail? who cares?
but for 5k? might as well pay extra every year for a full blown detail with buffing. and if you get a crappy install with the spray on, you'll regret it real bad. there are some real horror stories with that stuff just pealing off.
spray on the bedliner stuff on the rockers, bed, and flares and be done with it. bumpers spray is a plus.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
I think I agree with all the negative thoughts. I think the truck will stay white with some Line-X Highlights. Plus when it's clean, the white/black combo does look really good. I'm a bit bias, but I think "Big White" is pretty sharp!

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
I've seen it on a couple of trucks before, but usually older trucks. I like the flat back look of it, but I can only imagine it's a pain to wash. It would tear up wash rags something bad. I like how your truck looks now. I'm wanting to do similar, but finding the cash is important. That's also the reason I have the dark gray/black combo, it doesn't show dirt as bad. I've always like silver and gray vehicles b/c of that fact. My work truck is white, and if you look at it the wrong way it gets dirty!
Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
I would consider getting it wrapped if you want to do something different. Bed liner would weigh a ton and not look that great.
We saw this truck in person today:

The body finish is a wrap and it looked incredible.
Oh, OK Auto from NJ had a familiar Ram as part of their display:

I did not snap any pictures of my own but it was cool to be able to crawl around both of them.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
Wrapping is also a good idea. I think my local graphics place ball parked a full size truck around $2500. He puts a full wrap on his lifted 1500 Silverado and changes it every couple years.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
I got a work call while we were in that area was tied up on the phone while my buddy got to look things over. I was kind of frustrated by the time I hung up because it seems like I can never get away for a day without work intruding so I kind of forgot about taking pictures. It was dumb on my part because the truck was very cool.04Ram2500Hemi wrote:Wrapping- not a bad idea to consider. However, no good pictures of the AEV Ram?

Here's some pics of my friends truck. And after I looked again he said it would be between $2000 and $4000 depending on the artwork and install. So you may not be saving a lot depending on where you go.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
The real question is how tough is the wrap? I'm far from hardcore but having branches go down the side of the truck during hunting season happens. I'd be pissed off if my $3,000 investment was ruined in one outing.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
I've never asked him how thick it is or anything. I would assume it's just like a thick sticker over the entire truck. The graphics kit on my 400ex is very thick vinyl and it would shrug off nearly everything unless you have a very large tree branch that is going to do body damage hit it. The lamination they put over it is very thick and durable.

PowerwagonMark sprayed his entire truck. He hasn't been around in forever so I don't know if he still has it. The look was right for his truck. He was lifted, snorkel, lots of black. It was a tough looking truck.

04Ram2500Hemi - How has the linex you have on the bumpers and rockers held up over the years? Has it faded much/at all? Does mud leave a residue on it that's noticeable even after washing? I ask because i would like to spray my bumpers too but i'm concerned about keeping the linex clean and how it will look after a few years.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
I've got my bumpers and grille sprayed also and it looks brand spankin new after I wash it at the car wash with soap and water. Like they just sprayed it on. In some weather it even has a natural glimmer or sheen to it also when it's clean, like I tire shined it or something, even though I didn't. I spend a little bit more time when I hit it with the soap just to make sure it gets all the dirt out of it.

Re: Honest No BS Opinions Wanted
The black bed liner in my PW is stained with mud and animal blood. I have scrubbed with various cleaners and tried my pressure washer and the stains have not come out. Liner is under a shell, so it's protected from the weather. I think our desert mud is highly alkaline, so that may have something to do with the stains. Trick may be to scrub with a mild acid, like white vinegar, but I'm not inclined to screw with that on an exterior coating.
