Alberta boys thinking of moving to Edmonton....

Post by 2wagons1driveway » Tue Feb 10, 2015 7:59 pm

Hey all you Alberta p.wagon guys I may be moving out there in the spring/summer. A dealership near spruce grove side of Edmonton is interested in bringing me down and my fiancé has an internship starting in may. See it as a good opportunity to do something pretty cool. Kind of worried about rent and stuff around that area I know nothing about it. I expect wages might be a bit higher then here for my trade...which would be nice considering I'll be paying most of the bills....:/ how's the sledding around that area I believe the mountains are pretty far away from Edmonton? :/....how's that area to live in? Housing/ renting readily available?. I'd imagine it's gunna be cold as balls there lol so maybe I need another block heater also...lol anyways any input would be appreciated only chance I'll get to do something like this considering my bills aren't crazy right now and I have nothing holding me here if my dogs are already out there....o ya and my fiancé too I guess ;p

Thanks all.

I'm in Red Deer, only an hour and a bit south. Prices are not terribly cheap here, but in average, a good wage makes the difference. You gotta go several hours for mountain sledding, there are trails around Edmonton, but you'd need to research to find where, and who makes and maintains them. Lots of open fields, but farmers don't always appreciate sledders! Take you a few hours to get to the mountains. And really, this winter hasn't been too cold. My girl lives in St. Catharines, and we've laughed about the harder winter she's having then we are. And the mountains!! The trails!! Spectacular!! Cmon out!!

As an automotive technician, I don't know if your wages will be any better but as a general rule, wages here are better. No provincial sales tax( yet) saves you thousands per year. Housing/ rent is average to high but it is likely a bit better out in Spruce Grove and west of there. The city of Whitecourt AB is 1 hour north of Spruce Grove and it has some of the best snowmobiling in western Canada. Many hundreds of Kms of groomed trails and a snowmobile club that is well established and involved in the community. The trails take you into the swan hills area which is a vast area of wilderness with many lakes and wildlife. There are even grizzly bears and wolves ( I've seen both) north of the town of Swan Hills. The mountains are about 3 hrs away. Your kinda forced to sled in the foothills or go west past the park(Jasper). No sledding in the park. Valemont BC is about 5 hrs away and has some fantastic mountain terrain for sledding. I don't have a sled but I do have a couple of quads.
Moving here was a good choice for me , even though I miss BC. There are a bunch of us power wagoners in the area so you'll have someone to wheel with.
Weather wise the cold won't be to much worse. You work inside so you'll be fine. 1 block heater is more than enough.
Your beast of a truck will blend in well here. No shortage of rednecks here. I live in sherwood park which is on the east side of Edmonton. Sherwood Park and St Albert are rated in the top three best cities in Canada to live in. That factors in all things such as arts, standard of living, schooling, hospitals, housing.......and so on. I would think that Spruce Grove is very similar. Hope this helps. 8-)

YOU CAN BE TRUCK 7 fFOR THE MEETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't have said it much better!!! A lot of people forget about the sledding up by Whitecourt. The triangle between Whitecourt, Fox Creek and Swan Hills gets a ton of snow almost every winter.

Yes cost of housing is a little higher than average, but overall cost of living is quite low (no sales tax, flat rate provincial income tax, reasonable property taxes, low gas prices)

Also, Edmonton is really coming into its own as a great city with a ton of festivals and activities throughout the year. There is something for everyone, Fringe Festival, Heritage Days, Folk Festival, Ice on Whyte, all kinds of sporting events (even though our hockey team sucks right now) and many, many more.

And, I love that we are only 3 hours from the Rocky Mountains! Great wheeling, hiking, skiing and so much more.

Good luck in your decision and let us know if you need any more info.

Your pal is valid just call them with the address change. If you have restricted firearms you need to get an att to your new place. As far as hunting you will just apply for a WIN card. You shouldn't need to write a test but may have to show your Ontario hunting license. Other than that no issues.

well they made me a pretty good offer and basically said come when you can. I do have a lot of brand specific training so they really want me there whether they have to make a spot or not... Just waiting to see if they'll help with moving expenses and what not. Really looking for apartements for temporary living is actually surprising 10-15km from work nice place and reasonable :) can't wait for some pw rallies!!

The service manager is sending me an employee package to fill out so I believe it's official might be a month and half two months though! My gf starts in may at her internship and he said I am welcome there anytime I still have to hop on a plane and check the dealer out to make sure everything is good good and check out some places!

Ya man I'll be there In late April early may!!! I'm stoked! I'm hoping I can find a good place to live with decent rent!....I have been looking at turbo diesels considering that my truck will be my primary driver out there...it will be tricked out ofcourse :p I think gas is pretty affordable there though not having hst and what not. Someone told me it was still like 80€ a litre in Edmonton so keeping the wagon might actually be better on the wallet then even a new cummins.

Ps if anyone with family near spruce grove/ west end of Edmonton or friends that's renting a dog friendly place in the next few months point me there way! 2 dogs and just me and the girl! Found a few apartement complexes were rent was around 1500$ a month which isn't bad but isn't great either! Hopeing I can get rid of my sleds before I come out just to have some extra buffer in the bank and have that much less stress when I get out there cause it's a big move! Thanks again all! So stoked!
