Disaster on the way to Wilmington DE - PSP Pulley

Post by pdavey » Fri Jul 20, 2012 1:48 am

Well I was on my way up to Wilmington DE for work as I have a meeting tomorrow morning (guess this morning now). Just as I get to the toll plaza before the DE border my lights dimmed and my steering became tight. I pulled over the side of the road and popped the hood (in the rain) thinking I just lost a belt or something. Looked in and yep the belt was gone, so being the resourceful type I went to the truck box and got my extra belt and my gloves out of the box, went to the front of the truck and got ready to put the new belt on and noticed something missing.

YUUUUUP, my power steering pulley was gone except for a nub. So new belt wouldn't work. The really odd thing is the nub on the pump spins freely and I have no leaks in the system. The pump is still completely full and no power steering fluid sprayed anywhere.

So got the truck towed to a dodge dealership in Wilmington and had the tow truck drive drop me off at the hotel.

Really hoping the dealership can fix it in the AM and it isn't anything major. I guess the pulley had a defect in it. Could that be possible?

Anyways they say nothing in life is easy, sometimes it is the drive :) Will keep you all posted.

What dealership did you get it towed to? I'm 30 min from one of them near the Wilmington border. Matter of fact I have to go there tomorrow to pick up a mirror for my wife's truck.

The pulleys are made of plastic (not a surprise). They are prone to stress/ heat fractures and can break with no warning. When I removed mine, it had stress cracks all over if, that's the main reason I got a new one. If you just buy the pulley, you can get it at Napa, you just need to machine it out. If you don't get it through Napa, you're going go pay $500 big ones to get it from Dodge. Its $17 from Napa and about $50 for machining it out.

Best of luck and let me know if you need any help or have any questions. There are a few more details I don't have time to write about right now to get it on, so call me if you go that route.

So good news the dealership called and the powe steering pump seems fine and is sourcing a new pulley (not Mopar). Makes me feel better about them. The repair will be about $450 for parts and labor.

Should be fixed by tonight.

$450 for a pully? That's robbery!

Well I had to pay $1,000 to have an injector replaced in Knab last year, that's just as bad....
