Group Buy of Iron Pig Off Road Rear Diff Skid

Post by Ken G. » Thu Jul 19, 2012 11:31 pm

Just got the prototype onto my rig. Pictures and info about it are posted under Member Builds. Testing will be accomplished ASAP. Hopefully, I will be able to have other PWR members present during some of the testing so that you can have multiple opinions, both objective and subjective. I will post conditions, results, and pics as quickly as I can so that you all can make informed decisions. Please add in your user name for the poll if you decide you are interested. I will be able to find out the cost per unit from Iron Pig once I can provide them with solid numbers of those interested in one. Obviously, you all would certainly want to know the cost before definitely saying yes, so this poll would be essentially finding out numbers of members who probably want one. You reserve the right to recind your interest in one if the test results or cost is not to your liking. I promise to get Iron Pig to give us the best deal possible. If there are many folks who want one (they can ship them), then the discount will be even more, within reason, as that I am certain they will want to make some kind of profit for their efforts. I do expect that they will provide the production models for around $200.00 or less, but that is just my speculation at this point, so please don't hold me to that number.
If you decide to change your vote from Yes to No, please delete your user name from the Yes list.

I voted Yes. I hope it fits and clears my Rockcrusher cover. I'll be taking a chance buying it. Why not? If it doesn't fit, I'll simply resell it for the same price but lose out on shipping.

If it doesn't fit initially with the Rockcrusher, you could probably modify it to fit by cutting a small semi-circular section out of the rear part of the diff skid to allow clearance for the Rockcrusher. However, I do think it will fit. I'll try and get a measurement of how much space exists between my OEM cover and the rear lip of the diff skid....maybe that will help assuage your concerns. How's that sound?

That sounds good. Thanks, Ken!

It's raining at the moment, but what I can also do if it let's up later is measure how far out the RockCrusher sticks out, with a pic.

Ace, I measured the space between my OEM cover at its outermost point to the inner edge of the lip at the rear of the skid plate....looks to be about 5/16" of space. That Rockcrusher cover may just fit.

I think they can. I would say shoot them an email at info@ironpigoffroad.com and see how they could work it for you OCONUS. If you're military, they might give you some kind of discount, too. I do know they have done some work at their shop in the past for DoD on some rigs that were going to be used in Afghanistan.

I can ask them, too. I'll be talking to those guys sometime soon....when I give them some feedback on my testing of the skid plate. Plus, when I give them numbers of how many folks want to buy one. If you contact them via email and get the answer you need, and decide you definitely want one, make sure you cast your vote on the poll at the top of this thread so I can get a solid count to give them at Iron Pig. I'll also keep track of user names so they get to those who went in on the group buy. I'll keep everyone posted on how testing goes, too....I'm pretty certain it will handle everything I put it against....it is beefy!

*Note: I'm hjaving a little difficulty getting the code list to work to make the list show clean and in the items in the correct columns here in PWR compared to DT.
And the colors don't work!! I'll eventually figure it out.

I may be interested, it just looks a little wide on the rear. Ken, when we meet in person I'll take a closer look before I commit.

No worries! Maybe we can link up weekend after next....or there abouts. It is a wee bit wider than the diff, but really only enough to accommodate the differential within. It narrows as it runs out to the pinion and driveshaft end. They gave it a bit of width at the back so that if you slipped off a rock in an off camber situation, it would protect a side impact to the diff case or cover from that angle. I like that Iron Pig analyzed the different ways a diff may take a big hit, especially in the rear end, and made sure the design reflected that. To my eyes, it doesn't seem too obtrusive when I look underneath. Well, hopefully you'll get to see it with your own eyes soon. Plus, when we link up, maybe we could test it a little so that everyone can get your perspective as well.

You bet! I could use some other eyes and minds working in order to do good testing on this thing. Also, we still need to figure out a good weekend for a GWNF run!

Here's a picture from straight behind it, to give you a better view. The width alows for the flanges, along with the bolts and brackets attached to them, to be protected as well.

That's a much better angle. I wasn't knocking it by any means, I'm just trying to keep as much stuff from hanging low as I can. If I were running 40's it wouldn't be an issue. The weekend after this one looks so far to be free. Hopefully it will work for you and Peter.

Oh, this Saturday they are having a mud bog by me. Its put on by the West Virginia Mud Hunters. Google it and see if its something you might be interested in coming too. I'm entering.

Oh no....I didn't think you were knocking it at all! I want everyone who has any interest in it at all to not be afraid to ask questions or offer their design concerns. After all, everybody's got a vested interest in making sure they choose the right pieces of kit for their truck. That's part of what this forum is all about. I can definitely say that it is tucked up as high as it can reasonably go and I've already had guys come up to me and asking about it. It doesn't hang low, but it catches your eye if you look for that kind of stuff on other people's trucks....like truck people do. I'm certainly glad it doesn't look like the "Truck Nutz" some of the street truck dudes around here like to sport! I know you've seen them......huge aggressive tires with "wet look" all over them, shiny "all day" rims, 8" lift blocks, and not one speck of dirt!

As far as the mud bog this Saturday goes.....well, unfortunately I will be out in Washington state on a business trip. Otherwise, that sounds like it would be some pretty good fun! Rootin' for ya'....hope you win and do the :winchmob: proud!

Just an observation. May need to drill a few drain holes in it. Otherwise I could see it ponding and rusting.
2005 Black Pow Wagon mods: DT Profab Steering Brace, Gibson superflow catback single exhaust system, Locker Bypass, Moog ball joints (see how long they last), New OEM track bar bushings, T-steering upgrade w/ Bilstein 5100 steering damper, Power everything, Heated leather seats, (keeps the better half happy), Rear window defrost, Bilstein 5100 shocks, 35x12.5x17 Toyo AT2 Extremes, Customized H2 alloy wheels, Original rock rails with family friendly steps welded on, Tri fold tonneau, Hi-lift extreme jack, Tool box along with all the essential PW gear. New winch cable, Winch TPS bypass, Cardan joint grease zerk discovery. New front grille assembly. Magnesium Chloride under coating.
