New guy with towing question

Post by RamMan » Mon Sep 01, 2014 11:20 am

I just picked up a 2012 power wagon and was wondering how they handle the hitch weight. I will be towing a 26' toy hauler with a hitch weight of approximately 1000lb, and gvwr or 10000lb. I was thinking I might need to get some airbags to keep it level, anybody have any experience towing with that much hitch weight? Thanks' in advance for your help.

Probably going to want to use a weight distribution bar.
2006 Power Wagon, factory rock rails, Carli 3" with Carli control arms and Deaver rear springs, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoir, 2008.5+ steering upgrade, 37" Cooper STT's on stock wheels, Warn wireless winch controller, Dynatrac ball joints........and more to come as the wallet allows.

Get the Firestone bags and the Daystar cradles.

Both of the above. PW rear leaves flex quite a bit under load.

I use Timbrens and a WD hitch towing a 30 ft TT. The ends of the shorter leaves are starting to curl ever so slightly. I didn't use Timbrens the first few years and I think that may be one of the causes.

I'll let others comment on their experience with helper springs.

Those Timbrens look great and won't affect the travel of the suspension. I was concerned a regular air bag might not stretch enough when the suspension flexes. I forgot to mention I will have the weight distribution hitch.

If you use Daystar cradles the bottom of the airbag isn't connected to the axle. It just sits in the cradle, so it doesn't limit down travel. The axle will drop away if necessary.

Timbrens will limit up travel. I remove them for wheeling.

I tow at 10,500 lb toyhauler. Hitch weight is 1250 empty. Mine is never empty: 2-30lb propane tanks, 2 deep cyc batt's, & a 2' x 4' x 7' storage space jammed packed with stuff.
Use what ever you want as far as spring help. Air or helper springs, your choice.

I chose http://www.suspensionconnection.com/352 ... -3500.html They work great for me. Install once. Want full flex-remove outer 2 u-bolts on each end. Easy peasy with an elec impact gun & 3/4" deep well socket from HF. With them on & fully bolted, i loose about 6" of rear articulation.

If you have the coin, Carli long travel air bags are worth the money in my opinion. I've had mine ~2yrs (I think), and they have been great and do not limit my articulation at all (when aired down or course).
2007 Dodge Power Wagon - Inferno Red Quad Cab, G56, KRC 210X cam, SRT8 JGC seats, 35x12.50 Toyo MT's, Offroad lights behind the grill, Warn wireless winch remote, Carli front Diff Guard, Carli Long Travel Air Bags, On board air complete w/ train horns, homemade hidden gooseneck hitch, Homemade locker bypass, upgraded Mopar steering box, Centerforce clutch
1998 Dodge 2500 Laramie, QCSB 4x4. 24V cummins, completely rebuilt chassis with '01 1500 body installed, full gauges, Edge drag comp box, +150hp injectors, performance 47re built by me, 35" Toyo MTs on 3rd gen wheels.
2002 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4x4 Quad Cab 4.7L Bright Silver, HO Cams, 12,000 lbs Winch mounted behind bumper, 4.56's, 2500 factory tow hooks, 35x12.50 Toyo MT's, Air-Lift Ride Control bags, homemade hidden ball gooseneck hitch.
1987 W100 - carburated 5.7 Hemi/727 combo, 35" Toyo MT's. Ramcharger D44 w/ warn hubs, Warlock seats, 2nd gen center console
1987 Dakota - RCSB, 413 big block, LT headers.
And a few jeeps for good measure.

I used this same setup on my 2011 and was very happy with it.

Thanks for all the good options, I like the Carli air bags and I might get those at some point. I think I will run with the Timbrens for now and get the Carli's when I do my lift.
