Power Wagon Registry

Selling the wagon. I never thought this would happen but I want to downsize to a new 1500. I just don't use the truck nearly as much I would like and a 1500 just makes more sense right now. It might not happen but it's a thought that I can't get out of my head. It would get replaced with a 1500 Laramie, possibly with a diesel. Again, not 100% sure yet, but it's a possibility...

Not to sound insensitive but I wish I was near you so I could buy your truck!!! The new 1500 is a gorgeous truck and if I could get away with having a half-ton, thats the truck I would buy. If I didnt even have to drive a truck, I would be driving a first gen rubicon!! Good luck with whatever you decide.

If I had an actual need for this truck, this thought wouldn't be crossing my mind. I'd love to sell it as-is to one of you guys. You guys know what's gone into this truck and that everything is done right... A no-bs number for what I would need is $45k. Private party blue book is about $40k and there's about $15k worth of mods on it. I'd keep it as it sits right now with the exception of the power steps.

I had actually been having the same thoughts here lately myself. I went and test drove two different 1500 longhorns. I thought that was what I wanted until i drove them. They are super nice trucks but I just didnt get that feeling like I do when I climb in the wagon. And when they told me what they would give me for trade in on a truck that was less than a year old and under 10k miles that confirmed I was happy with what I have!

I traded out of a 2010 1500, and have owned two other dodge 1500's with nothing bad to say about any of them. And the wife and I are planning an addition to the family soon, so there is a strong chance i will be back in a 1500 before long, but I'm gonna enjoy the wagon while i can.

Don't do it! IFS sucks. I had a 3G 1500 and replaced a lot of front end components. That's why I upgraded to a solid front axle.

Do not do what I did and sell your PW! I sold my 2010 a couple of years ago and 3 or 4 months later was hating myself. I now have a 2013, and am light about $10,000 because of my short sighted rashness mistake.

Just sayin'.....

I had a 2007 IFS and ultimately grew to hate it. Initially I thought it was an amazing ride... but that was on smooth city roads.

It was impossible to keep traction on anything but mostly level off road situations. The ride off road was quite literally miserable. The lack of load capacity drove me nuts! The advertised MPG just did not ever become a reality. It felt flimsy and light causing me to loose confidence in it entirely as a truck.

I did not like the 2500 as it was just too unrefined and rode like a tank. The PW was simply the best compromise of everything!

IMHO a diesel is a very bad choice until they get the bugs worked out on the emissions issues. This has been my opinion since 2008!

I sure hope you don't regret the change to a 1500 but time will tell.

Try before you buy. Rent a new truck, in this case a 1500, for a week. See if it's something that will work for you and ultimately live with. Put it through the paces of what it can encounter in your lifestyle. Then you will have a more certain answer of what you want to do without it being a no turning back situation and reset on your monthly payments.

This is what I would do.

This /\ is a great idea and will be money well spent. For the record I have "graduated" throughout the years from a '03 1500 to and '07 1500 and now in my '10 Wagon and it's been the best truck of them all including the ride. I use it everyday from work to play to hunting to long trips and would not own anything else. I plan to drive it until it just wont go any longer. The HD drive train components are worth it alone, they last longer and stand up to more abuse (not that I'm hard on mine). It has plenty of room for the family and we've taken it from Florida to Pennsylvania a few times. I never have to worry about whether or not the truck will get me where I want to go, I've helped many other people in need during bad weather and such. I just cannot see me personally ever "downgrading" after owning this truck. Drive it until the wheels fall off man!

OH, and have you had a chance to make another smart bar bypass harness?

No 3gen bypass....?...please keep the pw

This is a good idea- would have kept me from losing the $$$ from when I bought a Tacoma and traded it in after only a month!


My two cents on the 1500 idea- don't do it at all!!!! You had a 1500 before the Power Wagon and traded it in for a the Power Wagon, correct??? Why go and get rid of a badass modified Power Wagon for a stock 1500 and higher payments???? I personally would not own a 1500 unless it was in addition to my Power Wagon! (and in order for me to want it, it would have to be a new diesel with a stick shift, regular cab, Black on black package, Express 2wd (since they don't offer that (and I don't have the $$$), I wouldn't have a 1500 in my garage!)) Realistically- I would not touch a new diesel with a ten foot pole until about 2 years from now- wait for all the bugs to get worked out of it!!!! The IFS of the 1500 just does nothing for me though (unless lowered 2wd sport truck with stick shift and awesome fuel economy like i described above), I'm not a fan of IFS and would never want to wheel an IFS vehicle. (I have before and it's just not all that good) Okay, maybe I'd be willing to wheel an IFS rig BUT, it would have to have a custom Prorock 60 center section with long travel heavy duty CVs, coil overs, full custom long travel setup. (think like an IFS Ultra4 class race truck) I've not seen any stock IFS (other than Hummer H1) that inspired me to feel confident in its strength and ability to hold up to going wheeling. At any rate, the point of my rambling is-

Wow, this didn't go over well. LOL. The idea of renting isn't a bad idea, but I've had 2wd 1500's and they did what I needed without a problem. I bought the PW a couple years ago sort of as a gift to myself for a job promotion that also landed me a company car. I didn't have a kid at the time and the PW worked for what I needed as far as a driver. I wanted the PW to take some offroad trips and to have an awesome toy. I simply don't have the time anymore to take offroad trips, and really didn't even before the baby. The kiddo is more important and it's going to be awhile before I might actually get to use the PW as a PW. Anything that I do in the PW is just playing and I have an ATV that I can have almost as much fun on. Hell, even the ATV hasn't been started in about 10 months.

What I need now is a more sensible truck for the family. The Jeep has been great for a family vehicle, but there are lots of times that I also need a truck. The wagon gets very tiring after a long trip, not to mention averaging 10 mpg. I know some of you think I'm crazy but this would be a good move for the greater good. I'd be saving at least $300 per month in payments and fuel and have a much more comfortable vehicle to drive. Like I mentioned, it's not a definite decision yet, just looking at my options. Keep in mind that a new 4wd 1500 will not get used for offroading. It will be a pavement queen only. The only reason I'm springing for 4wd is for our occasional snow and ice. We don't get enough to justify needing a PW to get around. The 1500 would get leveled with some stock size AT's on it...

This is also not to say that I won't be back into a wagon in a few years. For me, half the fun of a vehicle is building it. Since the wagon is more or less done for what I want, part of me wants to move on to something new. I like the idea of getting back into a used 4th gen in a few years. I could buy it a lot cheaper that what I owe on this one and wouldn't feel nearly as bad for beating on a $40-50k truck.

And I have plans for getting some harness work done this weekend. Not sure if I'll get any of them fully complete but I'll do as much as I can.

I have been thinking/pondering the same thing. Don't think i will do it though. My reasoning is different though. I want to retire soon & simply will not be able to afford to drive it around the country to travel. Ours is paid for, owes us nothing & is a kinda rare one to boot. If ever i do decide it's gotta go, i will list it here first.

That's a shame. I've always thought yours is the nicest truck on this site (and nicest PW I've ever seen).

Hello myoung84, my thought would be to get the truck that best suits your needs. Having a PW is great but like everything there are trade-offs. A new Laramie 1500 with a diesel would be a great truck go for it and post up some pics...

I'm thinking that a Hemi 1500 might be a better fit. I'll just have to wait to drive the diesel to be sure.

You can have my Power Wagon, when you pry it from my cold dead hands...... When I buy a Truck it is for a real need, not for truck of the month. But then I have family members who buy/lease a new truck every two years. I gusess I do not have the cash to Buy something like the PW, and then just resale and play with another toy. good luck.

And with 3.92 gears and the 8 speed, the first gear ratio in high range is much better than the 2500. (14.7:1 vs 18.5:1). It will be a pretty quick truck.

I bought it as a toy more or less and didn't have a kid at the time. So, my needs have changed a lot over the past 8 months. I'll definitely lose money on the deal, but I knew that going in from the beginning. The new truck (as long as I don't get carried away with options) will save me money on the payment and fuel, even with the Hemi. I used to average about 18 in my 2wd 2010 1500, so I suspect I'll be able to get about the same with a 4wd and a more efficient transmission. An 8 mpg jump is huge. That's about $125-150 per I'd be saving just on fuel. It's not all about the money though, it's the entire package and what fits my current needs...

My neighbor just bought a shiny new Ford F150 with more bells and whistles than a parade. Nice truck and all but I would be afraid to take it off road. What is this world coming to? (Just kidding) Got to do what is best for you and your family. Minivan time?

Definitely not minivan time. LOL. The truck is plenty big enough for two kids in car seats. We won't have any more than two kids (assuming the next one isn't twins, LOL)...

IF you decide to go that route, Icon Vehicle Dynamics makes some killer products for the 1500. I've had the Stage Two kit on two Tacoma's, and found their product to be stellar off road. http://iconvehicledynamics.com/shop/424 ... on-systems

Unfortunately, and this would eliminate a 1500 as an opportunity for me, there are NO lockers available for the new 1500. I could live with just a rear locker - did so for years in Tacoma's, but not having one is totally out of the question for me.

If I ever had to (for whatever reason) wasn't into off roading any more but still kept my travel trailer and quad and therefore needed a truck I would seriously consider a 1500 with the diesel.
