Anybody put a doubler in a Power Wagon?

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

Anybody put a doubler in a Power Wagon?

Post by RAM4ROKS » Tue Jan 14, 2014 12:29 am

Out wheeling this weekend I noticed that even in 4wd low and manual 1, I still was wanting for a lower crawl ratio. I started to really miss the 117:1 I had in my K5 (sm465, 203/205 doubler, 4.56 gears) and I started wondering if anybody's done a doubler in a Power Wagon. Not a 203/205 but maybe a 241/271? (you can cut down and weld a 241 to make a nice range box) Now, I don't have a 271, I have a Borg Warner something (the numeric code escapes me) but, I still think it would be sweet! I was wondering, is the Borg Warner case strong enough to handle the torque load of having a 2.72:1 (or so) reduction ahead of it? I was thinking that maybe a Rubicrawler or NWF Blackbox or some other planetary reduction box might could be modified to go into place in a Power Wagon. (would likely be easy in an early 2012 and older with a 271, likely harder in a late 2012 and newer Borg Warner cased truck) Thoughts?

On another note, a small underdrive box (say 1.25:1) could be wonderful for us pre-2014 guys whose rear axles cannot be geared below 4.56! (I can't find one that goes between the tranny and t-case though)

EDIT: I just found a product called the Behemoth Drivetrain Strong Box that is a 2.72:1 reduction box for use with a 271 transfer case! (still not Borg Warner though)

Then there is this: http://www.4x4groupbuy.com/store/atlas- ... -5485.html ....................It would then have a crawl ratio of 296.576:1 with the 10.34:1 low range and 154.884:1 with the 5.4:1 low range.

FYI: 296.576 is Uni-Mog territory, big time !!! I also have wanted lower gears, even in 2wd, for pulling & backing up/in my camper .

You would probably have to change to an NV271 first though.

Someone actually did do this on their PW. That person did it for towing heavy with the auto trans. He was VERY HAPPY with the results he got.
