05 PW overheating problem

My PW has a minor leak at the end of the shaft on the water pump. It loses a little coolant in really cold weather, but I keep it filled. I also replaced the fan
last year and can see it is working fine. But today it started heating up, getting about 3/4 up on the heat gauge. On mine it typically sits right below
halfway. I also turned on the heat and it was blowing cold. I have now filled it twice today but it boils out of the back up tank. The engine runs fine, no coolant
in the oil. Any ideas? Anyone had a similar problem?

Hmm.. sounds like your thermostat has gone bad.

Actually, I just didnt fill it up enough the first time. I just tested it after the 2nd fill and it is back to normal temp and I have heat. I am trying to
avoid putting any money (replacing water pump) into this motor as want to add the 3.0 diesel or a new 5.7 with the 8 speed auto in it next year.
Thanks for the help!

x2 you can get a new one for around $20 it's cheaper than a rebuilt engine.

Recently had same problem with my 05 with overheating. I think radiator cap may have come loose or thermostat stuck. Replaced both for about $50. Plus 2 gallons of Zyrex ...$40.
