Clutch failed, with pics, Warranty is covering it
27k miles, towed once, and I don't slip the clutch, or beat it!
Accelerating onto the highway, shifting through the gears and between shift the clutch peddle went soft and once I let it out the RPM jumped (fu(k), lol.
Baby it a few more miles to where we were going, seemed fine just cruising, little load and it would slip. I could pull from a stop and lightly accel. through the gears.
Friend came and flat bedded home (to the dealer he works at) and we will see what's up tomorrow (still has power train warranty till 14', gonna have the tranny rebuilt while it's out since its noisy, under warrant).
Funny thing is I never smelled clutch....
Any ideas, thinking might be throw out/ slave related (bound up).
**UPDATE** 12-05-13, Ram is covering everything, all I pay is my $150 deductible.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
Was not speed shifting, mine does not quick shifting one bit, always a slight pause in N before the next gear, gotta drive it like a school bus lol.
From time to time she will grind into gear with the clutch to the floor too, and pop out of 5th/gring into 5th.
Bought it used w/ 8k, supposedly an old man owned/ordered it because he had an original PW, my guess is he did not use the clutch much more than starting and stopping.
I will update as I find out more later today.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
The kind of speed shifting I'm referring to is where you push & pull each gear desired at the correct RPM.(takes a little to find the sweet spot where each gear wants to go into & out of gear, the clutch can't help on a non-synchro clutch) This type of speed shifting can take some getting used to, but it comes in handy when you loose your clutch. I drove a non-synchro 12 spd Peterbuilt, the clutch is only used for starting & neutral for stops(never riding your clutch for stops)
Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
Sounds like the syncros are bad. One problem leads to/causes another. These trans are known to have bad syncros. If you are gonna rebuild, be prepared for big $$$$$. LOL
Is there ANY G56 that you can speed shift ?
Good luck & keep us appraised of the situation. We will all be there one day.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
By the sounds of the 5th gear issue you are having that the 5th gear syncro is out of the trans. My truck had the same 5th gear issue when I bought it (these trans are notorious for 5th and 6th gear syncro issues) and I had that replaced under warranty. Shortly after that was replaced I managed to blow out the 4th and 3rd gear syncros. My bad syncro's did not at all act like your describing, so I don't think it can be that for all gears. I would bet that either your clutch has gave up (doubtfull) or that the release bearing or clutch master/slave cylinder are faulty. Before you go tearing anything apart have you checked that the clutch fluid reservoir is topped up, and that you don't have any leaks in the line?

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
High all, bad news is all hydro's are ok, lots, and I mean lots of dust/clutch material was found when they took the slave out and inspection cover off.
If nothing mechanical let go or broke it will be all out of pocket for the clutch.
I am also getting push back on fixing the tranny, mind you my friend is a tech and the other is the parts guy. Fiat has made it very difficult for them the get things fixed that they used to be able to do with out much headache, pictures are needed, must be 75% sure it's bad....and so on....I am a bit upset....what's the point of a warranty then?
I don't mind paying fir the clutch, shit happens and I know it a wear part/hard for them to say it was defective vs. my driving.....the one time we used it to tow our friends 6k camper there was no slipping!!!! And it was just lat year!!!
Once it hear the total I will update(prolly Monday), if it needs a clutch I am really thinking of going center force, marahca noise and all lol.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
That sucks. I've never had or heard of a clutch that went from being good to making a vehicle undriveable that fast, without having been severely abused. Even when I broke my trans the last time, I absolutely smoked the clutch out of it (wore the friction plate down to the rivets because I could only get 6th gear to baby it home), and I could still drive it with pretty solid engagement once I got the trash wiggled out of the other gears so I could use them.
I have my Centerforce clutch and new flywheel sitting at home just waiting for this sort of thing to happen to me, but I am pretty hard on my truck so I expect it and budget for it.
Let us know what you find, and hopefully it is just a new clutch as repairing these trans can get pretty expensive.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
No news yet however got some basic pricing if I need to replace the clutch out of pocket.
After calling and talking to Centerforce I will be putting in a centerforce clutch and throw out. I asked about the noise Miles reported and at low RPM and the guy I talked to said its not the weights on the clutch but rather the gear roll over in the tranny (most diesel clutch MFG's note this too).
New O.E. fly wheel is looking to be a good ideal too @ $142 (not sure how much to resurface the existing one will be).
So $550ish for parts + labor
.....merry christmas to me lol

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
**UPDATE**
Problem found, pressure plate failed (Collapsed?), now I am talking with Chrysler/ram because it is a mechanical failure....and from the look of it has been bad for a long time/possible day 1.
They said it looks like it might have been slipping for a while and I may never have noticed it due to the gearing this thing has.
T.O.B. is noisy as hell and the flywheel is done as whell...I am hoping Chrysler/Ram will help me out on this.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
I hope the do, for your sake. Though more than likely they'll state it's been abused or neglected, etc...
Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
Hopefully you get it worked out!!!
As far as the centerforce clutch, I'll make you a deal on mine. I only put maybe 600 miles and it. And I put a new factory flywheel in it too.
I would be interested in your old clutch and flywheel. I need to send one to Valair so they can make me a dual disk and billet flywheel.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
Finally responded to your PM 08. Sorry I was a little late. Hopefully Ram will work with you on the pressure plate issue. Still gonna run the Centerforce? And the Centerforce guys told me the exact opposite thing...they said the noise was because of the weights. At idle there isn't enough centrifugal force to spin the weights outboard, so at idle they rattle. Push in the clutch or increase the RPM's and the noise goes away.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
thanks for the heads up on the used Centerforce, if I do go Centerforce (only if Ram leaves me hanging) I would like to go new (piece of mind).06wagon wrote:Hopefully you get it worked out!!!
As far as the centerforce clutch, I'll make you a deal on mine. I only put maybe 600 miles and it. And I put a new factory flywheel in it too.
I would be interested in your old clutch and flywheel. I need to send one to Valair so they can make me a dual disk and billet flywheel.
As far as the used stuff, as long as Ram does not want it back I will keep it and we can work out shipping if you really want it.

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
Thanks for the response, I am really hoping Ram comes through and covers it under warranty so I am only out $150 deductible. If I have to pay (which I plan to fight tooth and nail if need be) I really think it would be better to go centerforce (more heavy duty).MSparks909 wrote:Finally responded to your PM 08.
Funny about centerforce's response being different, the guy told me they put the clutch on a lath and ran it 150RPM and they made noise, they bumped it to 300RPM and it went away is what they told me. He told me there more of a chance of hearing gear roll over in the trans that the clutch making noise.
For the cummings set up but still

I can say my tranny has always been loud, we will see if its the same after a new clutch or not, I have come to accept the noise being normal as long as it does not get louder/show signs of failing.
I am beginning to think the clutch has been bad for a while causing the intermittent issues with 3rd and 5th synchros (clutch not disengaging), gonna have them document this so if I have still have issues with the synchros now/down the road its documented (might not having anymore issues with 3rd/5th with a clutch that works).

Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
Dealership has my back 100%, they told Ram there are no signs of abuse and that they feels it's may have been bad from day 1 and that there was no way I could have prevented this (confirmed by Ram saying the same thing back to me). The person handling my case ar Ram called but I missed it due to work, hope to hear from them tomorrow.TwinStick wrote:X 2.BigMike wrote:I hope the do, for your sake. Re: WTF happened to my clutch?
**UPDATE**
Ram is covering everything under warranty, all I pay is my $150 deductible....whew....much better than the $1500+ out of pocket.
I have to say my dealer has been awesome (helps that friends work there)
I am also thank full my friend has so many damn vehicle's he let be borrow them while my truck is in the shop. I was driving his 12' 2500 Mega cab/cummins longhorn (it towed me home) for a couple of days (he let me borrow it if I washed it lol) and I am now driving his 09' SRT8 6 speed Challenger (he needed the truck), gonna clean it tomorrow and then borrow his father 06' 300 SRT8 for the weekend (my fav. of their new school mopars)....I really miss my truck though lol.

Re: Clutch failed, with pics, Warranty is covering it
Hell, with that selection of loaners, I'd be happy with that arrangement for a while!
Glad Ram stepped up - pretty damn rare these days.
