It Was Bound to Happen Sooner or Later

Post by JBM Power Wagon » Sat Sep 07, 2013 6:10 pm

When I bought my 11 PW I had the dealer throw in tubular side steps so my wife and kid could get in and out of the truck easier. However, I had a feeling it would only be a matter of time before they would get damaged while off roading.

Last weekend my wife and I headed out just for a quick hour or two of trail exploring and while driving over a nice berm of hard clay I heard the crunching sound. When I checked afterwards the drivers side was bent upwards pretty good.

After we got home I figured I had better inspect the underside and mounting points a little closer. After taking off the side steps here is what I saw.

So, unless I get some sheet metal work done I'm not able to put any side steps or running boards back on. At least my wife said "it's not too bad getting in, and the truck looks better without the side steps."

Now I just need to find a proper rock rail with a bit of a built in step, which I know is A LOT easier said than done! :)

White Knuckle Fabrication in So Cal makes some nice ones, or you could get power steps (like I need to sell) and keep the look of nothing but make the wife happy with a step

I have the white knuckle sliders and they are nice. Also have a set of amp research steps I just pulled off.

I still haven't herd anything from Whiteknuckle on 4gen rails. I didn't like the looks of my fab bars either so I took them off! Hunting season now everything is on hold! Hopefully Whiteknuckle comes through other wise time to fab!

I will definitely keep checking with White Knuckle on the 4G sliders. I don't want to go with the power steps because of the winters here. I've seen too many get iced up and break.

What exactly are we looking at there ? Is that the underside of body/cab or is that the frame ?

Not sure where you live, however I still offer my servies, for around $250 we can make rock rails just like the stock ones, or however you want them to look, all you have to do is drive your truck to Jacksonville NC and we can comeplete it over a weekend. I cannot bend tube at this time FYI.

Also to note, I will not be back from deployment until around the end of the year so you will have to wait till then.

I wish I could just drive down there! I live way up in Edmonton, Alberta. It's at least a 5 hour drive just to get to the Montana border.

Can you make them for the 4G's as well??? If so I may have look into shipping up here. $250 is a great price!

Those pictures are of the underside of the body/cab. When I hit the berm the running board pushed upwards and deformed the holes where the rivnuts mount.

OUCH!!! That really stinks! I'm afraid to look at the holes in my rockers (looks like the exact holes my Aluminess sliders mount in), I am taking a welding class now so, hopefully by the winter I should be good enough to make some frame mounted sliders for my truck!!!

I'm going to have to take a look at where my running boards are attached...I know that I've bottomed out on mine a few (dozen) times, and I never really looked closely to see if they did anything to the mounts. I know mine have four brackets on each side, and my truck being an '05 the mounts might be quite a bit different. Plus, my truck is a regular-cab and the steps are shorter...so the mounts are pretty close together.

I hate my "nerf bars" too but thank god they are actually frame mounted. Cant wait to get the shop cleared out and my tubing bender up and running.

I was going to make a set for my son-in-law but with my short notice deployment I just went on and now having to move to New Orleans at the end of this month it will be a while before I start working plans to start building anything else.
