Re: Fog light upgrade w/pics
Installed 9011/HIR1s today in my old GMC with composite headlights (new headlights with glass lenses to replace the factory plastic crap). The HIR1s replaced a fresh set of Helios (not Hella) 100W halogen capsules. The HIR1s are better than the halogens, but not so much that they knocked my socks off. Pattern seems to be higher and wider with no other adjustments, and nicely complements the drop-in 35W HIDs that are in the low beams. This truck has the Painless relay to keep highs and lows on simultaneously. The HIR1s make the glass lenses noticeably hotter than do the HIDs.

9011s are better and trimming is no big deal. I use wire cutters and a pocket knife. Just make the tabs on the 9011 approximately match the tabs on the stock bulb. Clean the glass with alcohol before you install the lamp, even if you think you didn't touch it.So the best 3G fog light plug and play w/ no grinding or trimming upgrade is the 9012's ??

What are the odds...
Had a Sylvania Silverstar fog light bulb go out today, and here this was back up again. Found Philips 9011 on Amazon for $42.70 a pair - they will be here on Thursday.

Re: Fog light upgrade w/pics
One finally burnt out on me. Not bad. Over a year of service. Also if you go to a parts place and they have different part numbers, check them all. Likely they are the exact same bulb in different packages. I picked up a replacement for $26 at local parts store. Being that only Phillips is manufacturing the bulbs they should all be the same. I recently got programming to allow fogs to stay on with highs and correctly aimed the headlights to actually produce. And best mod ever. And I live in deer country. Well I also have aux lighting but I don't use it on the highway.

Re: Fog light upgrade
Got the bulbs in today from Amazon.Ducky's Dad wrote:...Aside from a bit of minor trimming on the ears of the new bulb, I have found that replacing the silicone O-ring on the new bulb with a slightly fatter one is the only other mod required. The fatter ring provides a better seal against the mount, but mine are in GM products, not PWs. Should be the same fit, though. Somewhere in my notes, I have the O-ring size noted; available from Home Depot or a plumbing supply.
You ain't kidding when you said they need a second O ring. The bulb base is over 0.100 smaller in diameter on the 9011 vs the 9006, so it will require a thick O ring to seal and center the bulb correctly. They look quite ordinary too; just a typical clear bulb with an upright filament, but they do show all the 65W DOT approval stuff.
So, I'll grind out the interior double tabs and re-contour the top tab, add the O ring and see how it goes. May not get it done until tomorrow tho...

Re: Fog light upgrade w/pics
So, in the relatively small town I live in, no one has silicone o-rings the right size.
I've ordered 100 #18 silicone washers from MSC for a whopping $10.00. That's the correct size for the application: 0.739 ID x 0.07 thick material.
So, if you need two, contact me, and for the price of a self addressed and stamped envelope, I'll send'm to ya.

Re: Fog light upgrade w/pics
Got'm in last night, and will add the silicone o-rings when they get here. They are bright, very bright. But, I need to adjust the aim of the lights some. Over the years, I've whacked the lower edge of the front bumper a few times, and I think the bumper is tweaked (not twerked...) down a wee bit. I haven't looked to see if the lights are adjustable for aim yet tho...
A Dremmel with a 3/16 carbide burr made short work of removing the interior double lugs, and it re-contoured the top lug just as easily.

Fog lights with high
Main Menu > ECU view > FCM/CGW > Misc. Functions > Enable Front Fog Lamp Output > Start > Next > Disable > Next > Cancel > Start > Next > Enable > Next > Export > Next > Finish
This is the sequence on the starscan. If the dealer cannot figure it out. Also they can disable daytime running lights. If a Canadian truck, they need to change the country code of the truck to USA. I did this to my old pw

Re: Fog light upgrade w/pics
I believe you have H13, both high and low beams in a single bulb, in the head light, so no, they won't work. I'd recommend the Philips XTreme bulbs as a replacement.7722eric wrote:hi thanks for the great post. looks like i will be replacing the fogs with the 9011"s. Re: Fog light upgrade w/pics
Well one of my 9005's burned out this weekend so I ordered up a new pair of Philips 9012 HIR2's to replace them, should be here this week.
I plan to do a side by side comparison between the good 9005 and the new 9012's.
Also from what I have read, the 9011's are no longer true HIR lamps, leaving the 9012 as the only true HIR still avail.?
