I'd like to get a bumper to protect against wildlife strikes. The AEV bumper is pretty but doesn't have enough protection for me. Aluminess has the double rollers and I'm uncertain how aluminum will hold up compared to steel. ARB modular is steel but requires winch re-positioning and is pricey. I'm leaning towards ARB but worried about install since I don't want to tackle that on my own.
It's surprisingly easy to install. Their instructions are good, and I took lots of pics when we were installing it on mine.
I've seen lots of animal strikes on the aluminum ones, don't let that worry you, it will stand up.
As for the disadvantages of dual leads set up, it puts a lot of leverage on the bumper and frame horns if you're pulling off centre, sure you get a lot of leverage out of off centre pulls anyways, but it's one more factor that the manufacturer has calculated for, vs a "let's throw another set of rollers on to make this work" type set up. I'm sure Aluminess has done their homework, but for me, moving the winch was not a deciding factor. Same winch? Yep. Still on truck? Yep. Works? Yep.

I am a little confused what the issue is with a second set of roller fairleads. If one set can handle loads, why couldnt a second set (or even a 3rd or more) if they were properly installed/secured/supported?

No problem with the fairness handling the load, just with the leverage being applied to it. If the winch is in its cradle, and the stock bumper is on, the side load is being handled in a way that it was designed for. If the winch is in the bumper, and running a side load on the rollers, again, it's in a situation it's designed for. If you run that cable out thru a second set of rollers, and apply a heavy side load to it, you run the risk of damage, due to the leverage placed by your rollers being 8" out from your winch, and your winch secured to the frame, and your secondary rollers being secured to the bumper. When you get that sucker under serious load, the less factors you have the safer you are. I may just be over thinking it, but I've seen shit go south when a situation of this sort occurs. That winch line wants the straightest pull it can get, and sometimes that 8" of turn may give before the truck gets moving.

Like I said, I'm probably over thinking it, but I would rather have the winch pull as straight as possible.

On my G3. The winch runs through 2 sets of rollers with the Aluminess bumper. The winch is still at the stock location with the stock mounts. The Aluminess bumper is close to the winch, but still have to run the second set of rollers to keep from chewing up the bumper. The bumper has taken 3 deer hits so far without bending. One of them at 75 mph.

Na, I dont think your over thinking it. That is completely understandable. But, as long as the second set of rollers are setup accordingly for the situations it can be subject to, it will hold up.

I am no engineer, but I do know that sticking a second set of rollers out just a measly 6 or 8" beyond the winch would definitely put some serious added stress on them in a side load pull.

Like I said, I'm probably just over thinking it!! ;) but I work with cranes and winch lines every day, and have seen the worst happen. I like the Aluminess, but I like the looks of the ARB better, which was the deciding factor for me. I like the AEV, but not the lack of protection on it.

One question Rusty, have you had any really stuck, balls deep in sucking mud side load pulls? It's a different load than the direct hit which the bumper was made for. I'm curious, I want some real world feedback from someone who's actually done this. Morgan, Mpersicke on here, is going with a steel bumper, made here in Alberta, which will have the same set up as yours. Believe me, I wanted to leave my winch where it was too!!

So I was running errands for work that just happen to have me going by AEV so I figured I'd stop in to get a status update on when products might be released. It sounds like between shipping issues and weather they have been delayed more than they thought they would, but there's hope for next week to see a public notice on products. I was told to keep an eye on the website, and to sign up for the electronic news letter to get the most update information. If I was a betting man I'd say mid March at the earliest, but there's hope for something to be announced before summer (maybe).

Exchanged an email with Dave over at AEV today. If you have a CTD you can probably order the Snorkel next week. For those of us with the Hemi it's going to be at least 8 more weeks before we can order the Snorkel. Kind of bummed, but life will go on.

At least I have a shop right here in town that can install mine once the parts get in. I'm just figuring it will be around June before I can do anything, but that gives me time to decide if I really want to or not. I've already talked myself out of AEV Wheels and the AEV Bumper with the long wait. Who knows, I might be saving more money by the time June rolls around.

So a little AEV Raised Air Intake/Snorkel Question; if you buy one do you go with the regular top or the circle top with the extra filter? The functionality of the extra filter appeals to me, but I'm just not a fan of the look. Thoughts?

With the Filter: http://forum.aev-conversions.com/showpo ... stcount=55
Without the Filter: http://forum.aev-conversions.com/showpo ... tcount=194

Sorry for the links. I would have posted pictures but every time I post pictures from my iPod it flips them upside down.
