Running 20psi on the street sounds like a poor idea. Below 30PSI and my truck starts to wander and feels like I'm on deflated balloons. I don't think tire performamce and pressure are linear the way this thread suggests.

For road driving, I have always used whatever air pressure it takes to get a perfect contact patch, and in 19 years of driving I have never had a problem with poor tire wear. The tire pressure varies greatly between different vehicles and different tires. With my truck and the factory duratracs, it is right around 62 up front and 46 in back (when unloaded). At those pressures, the contact patch is perfect and is the same in the front and back. With 8500 miles on the tires so far they still look basically new... no cupping at all, and tread is wearing nice and flat.

When I go to 35s or 37s, I'm sure those numbers will get drastically reduced.

My fronts are at 40-42 all the time. My rears are at 50psi when I tow. When empty I drop to 35psi. I judge wanted psi by how the tire imprints on the road and by feel. 50is a dump truck empty. 35-40 is much nicer. At 35 my rear tires only have about 1/2" per side width that doesn't contact the road. I could go lower but then it's squishy for the highway.

Yeah, its a juggling game. I try to start off at the perfect contact patch. If the ride is a bit rough I can deal with that. But if it is too squishy feeling, I would surely rather have a bit more air than needed rather than deal with poor handling.
