Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
The ride is not even comparable to your super duty. I used to occasionally drive F-250's for work and I hated them. I ordered my PW without ever test driving one and the first time behind the wheel I couldn't wipe the stupid grin off my face. If your benchmark for ride quality is a super duty, proceed with confidence.NickPic83 wrote:Having trouble finding one local to test drive. Anyone ever own or still owns a 2011-2016 superduty? I hate the way my superduty rides and I want to make sure it rides better than that. Honestly that's my biggest thing keeping me from pricing one out right now. I want to make sure it's has a decent ride on the road. I know about the tradeoffs of an off-road designed truck and a 3/4 ton truck at that, but if it's as stiff as my superduty I may need to reevaluate. I like to use my truck for long road trips with the family and the ride of my superduty just makes it unpleasant. That was one of the things I miss about the Raptor. It had good road comfort. I know this is a 3/4 ton so it will be a bit firmer but I just want to be sure it doesn't ride like my superduty.

That's great to hear. Like I said I don't expect a half ton ride but I really want something smoother than my power stroke.Low_Sky wrote:The ride is not even comparable to your super duty. Zing....doh. I guess I screwed up a bunch times lol owned a f150, a Raptor, an edge(wife), a fusion(wife's current), superduty and a fox body. I haven't owned Mopar for a while. I had Cherokee in high school and it was great. My wife had a jeep compass when we met. Nice looking with some great features but was a POS with lots of issues.olyelr wrote:NickPic83 wrote:...

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
We have 2016 F-350 single rear wheels for work. No comparison in ride. Even with utility beds (over 1,000 lb on the rear axle) the SD are harsh and bouncy. I have driven them several thousand miles at a time and my back is always sore even spread out over a few days. My PW I can drive 1,000 miles in a day and not be stiff or sore at all. Like I said, rides like a 2nd Gen 1500 (coil sprung front solid axle) as opposed to a true 3/4 or 1 ton SD/Ram. It really rides as good as or better than my Chevy 2500 Avalanche. Front is a little bouncier but the rear is more compliant. Rides better than my '93 Ranger (TTB front/leaf rear)
Biggest different from a decent HD half ton or other IFS truck is the steering is more influenced by road conditions (bump steer, wind, etc.) If you want a wallowing no feedback drive, this isn't for you. If you are used to pickups, it will be an easy transition.
At speed, these trucks are very decent in rough conditions, as opposed to the SD or my old Ranger which the rear end was likely to pass you as you bounced uncontrollably.

Some pics, wheeling the PW, and towing my 2nd gen. Hate the chrome but will fix it someday....

thats exactly how i would describe the superduty ride, harsh and bouncy. loaded it rides great but empty its horrible. the best rides i had in it was pulling a car trailer with my mustang on it. i am not worried about road influences. i am used to that after owning the super duty. between the front straight axle and the wide 37's, it gets pulled alot but doesnt really bother me. its more the harsh ride.
Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
That is about how I feel about the ride of my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 - "harsh". (when empty). This is especially so on rough pavement and at any speed on woods roads. With 1000 pounds of firewood in the back, it rides fine!
I did get to test drive a 2014 Power Wagon Tradesman and 2015 PW SLT - both on somewhat rough pavement, with no load. They both road very smooth in comparison to my leaf spring truck.

Trucks: 2003 4x4 Dodge 3/4 ton, 1972 4x4 Ford 3/4 ton (factory hi-boy), shopping for new Power Wagon (maybe 2024?)
Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
Yeah the coils should ride smoother but my superduty is on coils and rides horrible. Hoping the softer setup for off-road helps

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
I have friends with the Super Duty and the Ram rides significantly better and has a greater turning radius. Overall, the steering is tighter and more responsive. Our first half hour of ownership involved a Dump Truck coming into my lane after blowing thru a light, and me severing and the truck handled my over reaction beautifully. Honestly, I thought we would have rolled the truck. I'm confident being a chevy guy that another truck would have resulted in me losing control.
If Ram's intent was to get their 3/4 tons to as close as in handling as a 1/2 ton they've done a good job.
I was always a chevy guy, but Ram won me over. And I typically think of Mopars as being junk.

Actually this comment means alot to me.n it to discredit any other post here at all. First off its nice to hear a non-mopar guy comment. As usually u get brand loyal people say something is great because it's what they have and it's the brand they will always own. I was and am still a GM guy but really I am an American vehicle guy now. I was GM all the way because that's what my father was and still is and then i got into Fords too after owning a Raptor. Owned a Cherokee that I offroaded alot and loved it. I will say other than the Raptor I really miss and still think about my 06 GMC 1500HD. Great truck that I put thru hell and it took it. Had a very good ride for what it was although it was IFS so it should be smooth. My wife owned a jeep compass when we started dating. It was nice with lots of features at the time but a POS, lots of issues.MikeKey wrote:I have friends with the Super Duty and the Ram rides significantly better and has a greater turning radius. I think every brand has its pros and cons and none of them are perfect. As long as its not an import they are ok in my book but that's more a pride thing than the imports being inferior or not. This doesn't apply to exotic high dollar cars but that's a whole other conversation.

Brand loyalty IMO just breeds ignorance and a bland/overpriced product. Competition is a great thing, despite what many think, and only helps the consumer in the end.

Hey NickPic83,
I thought that username looked familiar. I used to be on the Raptor forum, and obviously a Raptor owner too (2012).
Got hit in the Raptor and after shop fixed the bumpers, body work and drivers seat, found frame damage.
Traded that Raptor on a 2016 PW. So in my opinion after driving a raptor for 4 years and then getting into a PW, my comments on the differences are:
1) PW feels like a 3/4 ton. As was said in a previous post, I notice mainly in rougher terrain/potholes etc.. Remember that Raptor was plush as hell.
Haven't driven a superduty, so I can't compare PW to that. I did own a Chevy 2500 before the Raptor, and the PW is more smooth than the chevy which you could feel the smallest cracks in the road.
2) PW uses more gas than my Raptor, I assume it's mainly the extra 1400 lbs. Probably 1mpg difference.
3) PW tows better and doesn't squat like the Raptor did when I load it up & head to the Mtns.
4) Steering is not the same as the Raptor. Raptor was downright surgical.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the PW, but it is a different truck than the Raptor.
Good luck man !

That helps me get a perspective.
1) if u don't mind me asking what year 2500?
2) I got 12.5mpg in the Raptor with CAI, long tube headers, high flow cats, cat back, and a tune. If I can get around that number I'm ok with that.
3) good to hear. I haul often and tow the mustang and small trailers once in a while. I put the WSI HD progressive rate springs on the Raptor which helped alot but still wasn't an ideal tow rig.
4)I can deal with that. To be honest as responsive as the steering was in the Raptor mine never felt right after offloading it the first time. That's even installing the RPG steering fluid reservoir, derale cooler and magnafine performance filter system I installed with changing the fluid often with Amsoil. Ford not upgrading the steering on the Raptor from a regular f150 I feel was a major flaw.
Thanks again man. It's nice to have something to compare to when i can't actually drive one. Been calling local dealers but it looks like no one local will have one to next year

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
To expand on my comment about the ride quality...
I have no brand loyalty when it comes to vehicles. In the year before I bought my PW I drove a 2007 Chevy 2500 daily (company truck), with occasional seat time in several F-250s of various vintages (also company trucks). Since owning my PW, I get occasional passenger seat time in my coworker's 2014 Chevy 2500. The PW has a smoother ride than any of them.
When shopping for a new truck, I was briefly considering Ford F-150 until I was assigned a 2014 F-150 at work. Everything about that truck felt cheap. I could feel the windshield wipers through the brake pedal.
The PW isn't 1/2-ton smooth, but it's way better than any 3/4-ton I've ever put my butt in.

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
And if ride quality is still not up to par for you, for under $1500 you can make it ride even better with Thuren's front and rear overland kit. Along with leveling the truck off 1.5" up front.
But honestly, I am not so sure what the big deal with ride quality is all about. I mean, I am not complaining about it by any means... its great in my opinion. But, its a 3/4 ton truck. If you want a plush ride then you might want to look elsewhere.
In my opinion, buy the truck for its main off road attributes, not ride quality... otherwise there is not much of a reason to pay the extra coin for the power wagon package. You can buy a regular 2500 and make it ride better than a power wagon for cheaper.
And who test drives vehicles anymore anyway
My last 2 brand new vehicles (this PW and my JKUR) I bought without ever even sitting inside of one

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
I know what your saying but just because it's a 3/4 ton doesn't mean it should ride like crap. As I said it's important for me because of what I'll be using it for. Everyone uses their vehicle differently...I understand it won't be caddy smooth but I just want to be sure it won't be SD harsh.olyelr wrote:

A half ton would PROBABLY fit my needs but wouldn't also fit my wants. I want a swiss army knife of a truck and I think the power wagon fits the bill. It seems that it does everything very well in stock form. So even if it comes up short in one Dept at least o would have a good foundation to build on and improve little by little as I own, which is half the fun!
Your nuts lol. I have test driven every vehicle before I bought it. I am close to just saying screw it and ordering a PW with test ride. Just nervous because I never done that and don't want to make a $50k+ mistake...

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
Olyelr's right. You don't buy a PW for the ride quality. That's just a nice bonus. You buy it for all the features that make it a PW, and there isn't any other truck on the market that can match it. That's how I ordered one without a test drive, or even a test sit.

Re: Thinking about buying but for some questions
My last truck was a 150 platinum with 4"s & 35's it rode better than it's stock form in my opinion. When I test drove the wagon about 3miles it was just as good if not better than the 150. I put 35 toyo mt's on the PW "no lift" before I drove it off the lot and I think it only improved the ride. Before I had the 150 I had a jkur. I loved it just not big enough for my needs but I still wanted all of it's features so the PW is perfect for me wish I would have skipped the 150!
