Great info!

In my case there were no codes I could read with either my tuner or Bluetooth OBD2 reader.

Not all code readers are created equal. Some just focus on engine, trans and evap systems (usually P codes). Yours may not be programmed to read body and chassis codes. I would wager there's a code present, you just can't see it. ;)

An OBDLink MX Bluetooth adapter and Torque Pro on my Droid Turbo 2 are what I use to monitor tranny/coolant temps when towing.

I have one which generates it's own WI-FI signal. It gives a lot of great info--but mostly P-codes I think, not sure about chasis codes though.

Three weeks into the repairs, they replaced the Dumbar, and that didn't fix it. So they have ordered a new wiring harness. I told them it was probably the rear actuator - I suspect they will get to it sooner or later.

That new wire harness is the entire harness that goes into the firewall and also goes to the ECM and TIPM. Make sure you didn't have any wire go through the boot or they will charge you. My harness had battery wire added in and they ended up charging labor on that part of the work. FYI, that harness is not cheap, it was $999 about 6 years ago. Labor is 16 hours plus, and they have to remove a lot of parts. Fender wells, air intake, battery, ect. Make sure all of your screws and bolts are back in place when you go to get the truck. Especially the battery tray!

Thanks for the info!

It"s covered under the drive train warranty.

I think they do crap like this to charge a butt load to the warranty. When it's all done, they will have nearly 4K in parts alone.

Was it just the harness or did they have to replace the rear actuator too?

So it was the rear actuator after all?

Do you find yourself glancing down at the lights while driving....you know.....to see if they are blinking?

Last item replaced, and bingo, they work.

Nope. It only got weird when trying to actuate the lockers.

I'm beginning to notice a trend... Towing of any loads of #5000 or more and shortly after the locker actuator fails.

I'm happy I over fill my rear differential as it gives more surface area to cool the oil. Both axle tubes with oil in them has got to help keep it cooler. I know folks say it will cause an axle seal leak but with an axle vent I don't think oil level is the cause. I also have the FilterMag GP101 and feel good about knowing the oil is free from metal sludge suspended in the oil to destroy the seals. I have had it this way ever since my first 15,000 mile diff service.

On my truck there seems to be some connection between towing and the serv4wd problem.

My first time was under warranty. Rear actuator was the fix. Started after towing trailer to Oregon for vacation from SoCal. Took truck out for a drive and just wanted to test / run lockers on a flat smooth dirt road. Wouldn't lock and got serv light on.

This last time I had tested lockers just a week or two before towing to Utah. Worked fine. Serv light comes on during tow up I-15 on second day.
I have done many other trips towing with no light coming on but still think it is connected somehow.

So, my rear lock light started flashing... Did it 6 month ago after towing a trailer 600 miles. Then didn't happen for months, then started to flash a few weeks ago any day I drove over 100 miles. Then the evaporator core went out. ( So, not covered under warranty. Big deal here in Florida. I called Dodge care, 2012 with 60,000 miles. They rebated me half.) Anyways, I had them change rear end fluids while it was there. Thought maybe oil was old and worn. Now it flashes after about 20 minutes of driving. Mine has the 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty but, I wasn't sure if it would be covered. If I take back to have them start to track it down I was wondering if I should have them start with the actuator or the sensor? I'm not too sure they can handle it. Every time I take to the stealer for something no matter how small they ask me if its a diesel. Mine is not debadged so..... :wtf:

It's an unfortunate reality that there are very few good diagnostic mechanics out there. Parts swapping via a diagram seems to be the normal now.

I'd ask for them to check if voltage is present at the axle connector when the locker switch is on. If it is, the actuator is probably out. It's also the simplest part to start with.

If you have a 100,000 mile factory warranty, they will follow the diagnostic order of things.
