Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
Did not see a listing for Dodge. When I was looking last summer, I called Titan and asked if they had anything that could even be adapted to a Dodge 3G short bed gasser. The answer was a resounding "no." OP might be able to get creative with a Chevy setup, though.
Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
I have jerry cans left over from my Jeep JK, but I may need more. I did find some 15 gal trnsfer tanks that fit between the front of the bed and the wheel well. At least only loose the least usable spot in the bed. I may try to figure out a system to transfer it directly to my tank from two of them. I don't like messing with fuel systems very much though....
Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
The state and feds have basically shut down any mods to gasoline tanks on vehicles. Just think what they have done to the 5 gallon "can" and it only gets worse from there.
Now , "for off road use only" , companies do make custom fuel cells/ tanks. Most racing trucks use rear mount cells and they work.
First ask a lawyer/insurance agent if there could be any problems doing mods.

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
I'll be running 6 - 2 gallon Rotopax on the rack, flat packed to save space. Also, shovel mount, and Pelican 1650 and 1600 for recovery gear and emergency gear.
If I am working in northern, more remote areas, I hate to have to empty out my work gear from the truck bed to get at my recovery stuff. Likewise, I hate to remove my recovery gear to unpack my work stuff at site.
Auxiliary gas tanks are a pain in the ass for laws these days.

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
I am wanting the same exact thing for mine. I want the RTT just at cab height, hold the spare and to retain use of my toneau, although mine is soft. I want the norm, Rotopax and Maxtrax, recovery tools etc. I would like to build the rack to hold a couple boxes of some sort under it toward the front. I did just order some of the undercover swing out tool boxes today as a start on bed organization and Ill have them in a couple days. I have a buddy that has a fab shop building me some sliders, then from there I'm thinking bumpers and the rack will be last, or next. Not sure yet lol. I think we have the same end goal. I want mine to be lightweight and removable without too much hassle. My concern is the strength of the bedsides supporting the weight. Maybe supports under the bed rail??? Use the pockets?? Not sure on that part yet. I will be following and post some pics when I get mine underway. I have also considered the lost space under the bed for a fuel cell with a good skid. I would keep mine basic. I don't mind transferring the fuel to the stock tank via gas cans or a small pump. That to me depends on how large it can actually be made or if it just makes sense to throw in a couple gas cans. These trucks have tons of room to carry stuff.

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
Just a heads up: Titan lists their tanks as being for diesels only. Quoted from their website:BigRed2007 wrote:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tfa-4 ... AvoE8P8HAQ
Q: Can I install a TITAN Fuel Tank on my gasoline-powered truck?
A: No. TITAN Fuel Tanks are only for diesel-fueled vehicles.
If I were to guess, I would say it is due to the higher rate of evaporation of gasoline (think about the charcoal evap canisters on gas powered vehicles) and thus the complications in trying to make an EPA approved auxiliary fuel tank.
Though, GenRight does make a 20G auxiliary tank for JKs that ties into the stock evaporative emissions system. (though I wonder if it might overwhelm the system on a hot day??? I've never seen any reviews of it)
http://www.genright.com/ProductInfo.asp ... =GST8202-2
If it does in fact work well, I wonder if it could be adapted into the spare spot on our trucks?
Also, Transferflow DOES make in bed mounted gas transfer tanks for our trucks. But, you would have to run a pump and pump it into your truck like you were filling up at the gas station, just with your own pump!
Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
Each state has different laws regarding aux gasoline fuel tanks.
NY State has effectively stopped me dead in my tracks. Has to be DOT approved & be installed by a NY State certified DOT shop !!!
Even if i had a Farm plate, it would only be good within x-amout of miles of the farm. This is what i was told by a NY State inspection station. I could do it & make it legal, but i would be looking at $3000+ by the time all was said & done.

I was looking at Titans tanks too the other day. I like the 30gal that mounts where the spare tire goes. But it would be like 3 grand all said and done. Still. It's completely out of the way. Doubles the size of existing

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
If you are going to “legally” add an auxiliary gasoline tank, it is going to be expensive. They must DOT certified (means dropping from 10 feet onto each corner, while full) or "for of road use only.” The CARB has made it all but illegal to even carry a Gerry can unless it has the CARB certified, impossible to pour out of, spout on it.
I am not subject to inspections and have only been ticketed once for non-CARB containers (that was in Missouri).
If you want to stay legal read these….
http://www.transferflow.com/regulations
then just put in a DOT certified transfer tank…that way you can give fuel to other guys too….

I was looking at it a 51 gallon tank and a transfer pump kit shipped for around $1100...if my numbers from a few years ago are still correct.

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
NTS007, you are also diesel right? Way different bag of worms than a gas tank.
I like the transfer flow options, but with my bed rack and cover, not very handy. I'll carry my 8-12 gallons in rotopax and get my extra miles that way when I'm out in the boonies. Highway drives with the kids need pitstops anyway, so gas stations are a typical stop over.

Looking online I have found some nice rack designs, but most of them are for smaller trucks like the Toyota Tucoma.

Just found these guys for custom tanks:

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
Here is a picture of the Thule setup I started on. It's not a custom made crazy weight carrying rack setup, but I'm not running an RTT at this time, and I wanted to retain my hard tonneau. It comes off in 5 minutes with the 4 Thule knobs, and then I have an open bed again for hauling big stuff. We'll see howe it works out. If I want bigger, I'll buy a Westcan Fab rack, but they are higher than the cab so the wind gets to be an issues. If you wanted this stronger, you could mount double the ross bars and feet I suppose, but that's $$$.
I think I will run it to the passenger side and use a 3/8" aluminum plate 14x48" on the driver side to mount my Rotopax fuel and water jugs / shovel and rope wraps.
Basket fits well, and I always like to toss the wert muddy gear up there, the cooler, and recovery gear.

Re: Off Road Rack for new power wagon
So I think I have a workable solution. TracRac makes a sliding ladder rack sytem and a utility box system. I am going to use the tracks for the bedrail system with the utility towers. The towers are 17" so would be below the cab, but right about head high for the bottom of my RTT. The top half of the RTT would be above the cab when driving, but not so much as with a ladder rack. I may use four towers to spread the weight, although two towers can hold 1000 lbs according to the specs.
Does anyone use these rack systems? What do you think of this idea? I requested a quote from the company, and I am ready to get a good rack. I think I will still be able to use my Bakflip bed cover also. If any one has experience let me know.
Thanks
