2003-current: IMHO, many people ended up with diesels ONLY BECAUSE the gas transmissions gear ratio's were a ALL WRONG for a HD truck. Plain and simple. Period. Because of this, the only way to compensate for this issue, was the diesel, which had gobs of torque, to make up for the pathetic transmissions gear ratios & horrible shifting patterns. I know. I had one. 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 QC 4x4 w/Hemi, 545RFE, 4.10's, HD cooling, snow plow prep, & towing pkg. It was HORRIBLE for towing the exact same camper i have now.
Same engine in my 2008 PW, different trans. A REAL 6-speed. Pulls the same camper with no sweat at all. No 2 overdrives, no 2nd prime, no kick down gears. If they made an auto trans with the same gear ratios as my G56 manual, MANY, MANY people, would have bought the Hemi, instead of the diesel. I am not knocking the diesel at all. It is just that, you really do not need a diesel to tow 10,500 lbs or less.
Remember.......not too long ago, our fathers & grandfathers used to tow 6000+ lbs with cars & station wagons.
This is just my humble opinion. YRMV.
