Toyo MT 315/70r17

Post by Gtop » Fri Aug 04, 2017 7:33 am

Thinking of swapping out the factory 285/70r17 Duratracs for Toyo 315/70r17 MT. The listed weight for the Duratrac is 54 pounds, the Toyos weigh 77 pounds. Is that extra 23 pounds per tire going to be really noticable? My truck is a 2017 and I plan to keep my stock wheels. I don't want the truck to feel sluggish or not brake as well due to the increase in diameter and weight

I didn't want it either but it happened. I have Cooper STT's in that size. There's no getting around rotational weight and rolling resistance. That said, I wouldn't go back to the stock duratracs.

Another option would be to go with a 285/75. It's not much smaller, and it weighs a little less. For comparison purposes according to the Toyo Web Site:

315/70 = 34.6x12.5 and is 78lbs
285/75 = 34.1x11.6 and is 69lbs

I went with the 285/75/17 Toyo A/T II's on my truck because I still wanted to be able to fit a spare in the factory location and I didn't want to have to worry about rubbing on my control arms at full lock (with trucks 2013 and older the magical width is 11.5 wide, after that you have to start worrying about rubbing at full lock).

I just put the Toyo RT in 35x12.5 on my truck. So far I haven't noticed too much difference. The spare fit, it's tight, but it fit. Not enough miles to really give you a full review. Instant mileage on the way to work today was reading the same, which is encouraging. I'm sure it's gonna bring it down some. I only notice a little rubbing right at full lock. I plan on changing the control arms eventually so not too concerned.

I've been very happy with my Toyo MT's in 285/75. My factory speedo settings are dead on. The 37x12.5R17 weighs 83lbs. Inertia increases exponentially with diameter so that's not a straight comparison, but I'm surprised how close in weight the 315 is to the 37. Food for thought.

The Toyo OC AT/II 35x12.50R17 is on my truck measured in at 34.50 mounted at max PSI. And weighted 70lbs while being E-Rated. Food for thought. Not as aggressive looking as the MT, but going to be just as big but lighter than a 315.

Another option I was considering was the Ridge Grappler 305/70/17 at 68 pounds. Haven't heard much feedback on it though

I looked at the Ridge Grapplers. Good reviews that I found. Nice looking tire and good load capacity. They were the heaviest of the tires I was looking at, but I was looking at 315/35 sizes. That's what help make my decision.

Anybody running the Cooper STT Pro? It's a pretty light tire, 66 pounds for a 315.

Yes... so far so good. A little noisy... About 3500 miles on mine, still looking good. I do 'think' they did mess a little with braking/shifting but nothing significant. I'm happy.

That gives me alot to think about. I'm going to try to make my mind up and order something next week. I'm off work the 14th. Gonna have something put on that day if I can make a decision. Lol. Thanks for all the replies

I tow'd weekly for about 8 months with those 35's on my truck. And the performance hit was negligible. I notice the 37's now a tad bit more. I think I'll notice them more in the hills. The 35's I didn't notice in the hills at all really.

Just got home from the tire shop. Ended up with STT Pro's 315/70/17 load range E.

The tire shop put 65 psi in the rears and 60 psi in the fronts. Even aired up so high they rode smoother the the stock Duratrac. Cornering and stability feel alot better. I feel the Duratrac has too soft of a sidewall. Always felt squirmy.

I dropped to pressure to 50 psi on all 4. I think I can maybe even go lower?

Haven't really noticed a change in power or braking due to the increased diameter and heavier weight.

Since the front of the truck is so much heavier than the rear, I would recommend running less pressure in the back compared to the front (except when towing or hauling heavy loads). That will give close to the same contact patch, which is really what you are after.

Chalk the tires or drive down a Dusty road then straight on pavement. Only way to really judge your proper tire pressure. Look at the contact on the tread.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

I have the same tires and size. Run mine 45 front 40 rear. Rides good. Then in winter I'll usually go 40 front 35 rear.

i went to 35s and noticed right away a decrease in braking and it downshifts out of 6th gear more. dont see how everyone else barely notices this stuff

Tire weight probably has alot to do with it. The STT Pro isn't a heavy tire compared to some other tires

Yeah, STT Pro is also prone to blowing sidewalls on easy trails.
