Which nerf bars?

Post by Numbnuts » Sat Mar 11, 2017 9:26 am

Wife and kiddies having a bit of trouble getting in and out of the PW.

I'm thinking N-Fab Nerf bars.....anybody have em and like em?

Anybody else recommend nerf bars w/a small step?

No need for rock sliders, just the nerf bars.

I really like the amp step that retracts but that's out of the price range......

I had the nfab stainless version. Looked ok. The step if wet is very slippery and they started to show rusty spots all over them after a winter. Save your money imo and get the amp power steps. I have them now and love them. Worked flawlessly through a Michigan winter and look 100% cleaner on the truck

I have nfab steps in textured black. they have held up well. on second winter. if they do get rust i can touch up with spray on bedliner.

Not easy, check out the install video on youtube. Worth paying to have them installed.

I'm planning to take my factory chrome nerf bars off and put White Knuckle sliders on. Nerf bars will be for sale. Coming off a 2016.

Thx for the offer but I think I'm gonna go with a black color step/nerf bar or auto retract when I decide which way to go

I was about to go AMP step then i realized I'd possibly be submerging and electronic step. Threw on White Knuckle rock sliders after that. I also caved in a set of nerf bars into my rocker panel before... so i like thd rock sliders and they make a nice, tucked, and compact step.

I have N-Fabs on both the PW and the Tundra, with OLD SmittyBilts on the GMC. The old Smittys have been on the GMC for 19 years and have been great. The newer Smittys are complete crap, including the ones made in China with the Smitty label on the N-Fab pattern (probably under license). The Smittys that look like the N-Fabs are not nearly as good as the real N-Fabs. The N-Fab nerfs are surprisingly strong and are holding up well, with one exception. A few years ago I buried the PW up to the axles and bent the mounts on the N-Fabs. Pulled them off the truck and reinforced the mounts with some nutserts and stainless bolts, much better arrangement and I am pretty sure I could jack the truck with my Hi-Lift on the reinforced N-Fabs.

Caution: I also have an N-Fab light bar on the Tundra and that bar is a complete piece of junk: bad welds, bad finish, bad fit (non-fit until I hogged out the holes). If you buy N-fab bars, get them from someplace like 4WP that will take care of you if there is a problem. 4WP swapped out my original Smittys on the PW for the N-Fabs that are on it now, after the Smittys started rusting badly.

I tried to avoid side steps; but, it pretty quickly became a PITA.
I have the oem Ram black tubular side steps and I'm very happy with them.
Very good fit and finish and I like the look on my them.

Easy? or not....
I bought the PowerBoards on Amazon as an open box return warehouse deal for $770 and installed them myself. It took about 5-6 hours, but I was working in the dark and I tend to be more detail oriented. The instructions were great. The hardest part for me was working under the dash board doing the wiring and routing the harness.

BLM being detail oriented? I don't believe that for one second...

Timgco if I had a fixture I would knock these out all day. They are so easy to make. But making them like I did by eyeballing and using a tape measure for everything, that took some time. I think WK charges too much but frankly it makes sense there is nobody else making them because there really is only one way to do it. I tried to make mine with a fresh slate - nope, you either mount like WK does or weld to the frame, or mount to the body panel sections like aluminess or Randy Ellis. I bet if you put mine next to a WK set the holes would almost line up.

I am not completely positive yet, but I am pretty sure my powdercoated wk sliders are starting to get little tiny rust spots on them  I knew it was inevitable, but I thought I had a little more than half a winter before it would start
