Oil weight for 2012 with 47,000 miles?
What oil and weight are you guys running?
I've only had my wagon a month. I was checking fluids the other day and to my surprise my cap says 5-20.

Amsoil 5-20 with Amsoil filter in my 07. Have 107000 miles on mine. Bought it used at 80000 miles, been Amsoil bumper to bumper since. Still have hemi tick, but way quieter.

Amsoil XL 5W-30
The manual says to use 5W-20 under all circumstances, and then a little bit later it says to use 5W-30 if you operate at a higher GVWR, I think 10,000lb. I ran 5W-30 because synthetic oils flip which number is the base weight. With synthetic that is a 5-weight oil that has the protection at operating temp of a 30-weight, so I figured why not?

I suspect that "why not?" was rhetorical - but I will answer anyway - minor negative impact on fuel mileage...DamageWagon wrote:Amsoil XL 5W-30

Ah, I said "why not" because I take it off road a lot but don't really tow.

All 5.7 Hemi's have used 5w-20 since 2004 and that's what I'd recommend. Any name brand synthetic and a Mopar oil filter can be had from Walmart for under $45. If you're burning some oil between oil changes use a synthetic high mileage oil it helps a little.

I've been running Royal Purple 5W20 for 2 years with no issues. Next oil change, Ill be changing to AMSOIL, as the rest of my fluids are AMSOIL.

Amsoil also sells the WIX filter, which is a good one. Since this is my first change with Amsoil in the engine, I will do the Signature oil and their eA 25,000 mile oil next. If you go Amsoil, pay for the Preferred Customer" thing. It saves you money off the bat.

I ran my 06 hemi with 15-40 summer and 0-40 winter just as we do in the diesels. Did the same with wife's jeep. Jeep still runs great and has over 400k on it. And the 4.7 takes the same filter as the 5.7hemi

I've switched to 0-40w Mobil1. Everything else I have runs on the stuff. So why not the PW. Funny thing is, my mpg went up.

Rusty, were you running synthetic before you switched? A synthetic 0W-40 is a 0-weight oil that protects like a 40 when warm. Whereas a petroleum 0W-40 is a 40-weight oil that flows like a 0-weight when cold. That's why synthetics help mileage.

How does that work then with my shell stuff. The 15-40 rotella t is a partial synth. And the 0-40 I use is the t6 full synth. Buy them by the 5gal and change oil religiously every 5-6000km.

Re: Oil weight for 2012 with 47,000 miles?
Part synthetic follows petroleum guidelines. You have to go full synthetic before they use the different base weight.
The Rotella T is a 40-weight
T6 is a 0-weight.
Notice the difference in how fast you achieve oil pressure, and the difference between max oil pressure between the two.

Re: Oil weight for 2012 with 47,000 miles?
I don't see much difference honestly aside from I have one of the cleanest oil fills you could ever get. Normally on diesels fresh oil after a change is dark. For me you have to really stare at the dipstick to see the level it's so clean. I run the k and n oil filter and swear by it. The wix one is pretty good too. As soon as the temp gets to freezing overnight I switch to the 0-40. And I'm pretty anal about the oil changes. My dad was the same way. We would buy shell rotella t by the 45gal drum and every 3-5 weeks oil was gettin changed. Oil is cheap. Cummins engine is not

Yeah, 5W-20 Mobil1 since new. Changed to 0W-40 around 50,000 miles. Have 66,000 on the beast now.DamageWagon wrote:Rusty, were you running synthetic before you switched? Re: Oil weight for 2012 with 47,000 miles?
Maybe your engine was just breaking in Rusty
nts how many miles on your oil change!? I usually did three changes a year on my Cummins. How many are you doing!? 3 gallons per change, two people... That's 1.5-2 changes per week for both of you? Or are you changing the whole fleet?
Or do you just drink the stuff?

Re: Oil weight for 2012 with 47,000 miles?
Every 5-6000km. Which depending if one truck is running straight is every 3ish weeks. On 3 trucks it's about every 6-7 weeks. 10 gallons for all 3 trucks combined. On the rotella T. On the T6 I'll push 7-8000km sometimes if I'm lazy. And since t6 is $130 a pail compared to rotella at $70 per pail. And that's just the 3 work trucks. My wife's truck gets more time but same mileage changes. Hers takes 3months to get 5-6000.
Trucks we are running for work
02 2500 qclb has appx 780,000km (dads old truck I aquired) all stock with 33's and 3.73's
05 3500 qcsb just over 410,000km (it hauls trailer 70% of its miles) mostly stock with 35's and 4.10's
My 08 2500 you're familiar with just passed 350,000km
Wife's driving an 08 3500 mega drw that has 126,000km appx (yea my wife's pretty bad ass). She used to drive the pw all the time taking the kids to school and such. All the women wanted to be her and all the men wanted to drive the truck lol.
Used to have some 98's 99's and 01's. All made it over 500k km for us and we still got a good dollar resale.
My dad was alway adamant about oil changes being the life blood. And always shell oil since the 80s. And there is a list of vehicles that goes on and on lol.
If it makes more sense my insurance and registration on all but 3 vehicles are under fleet policy's lol.
So when it comes to oils I've become pretty dead set on ignoring most manufactures recommendations for weight and have had no ill effect. Except for my srt8. I listened on that. Guess what I run in my 93 stealth rt/tt????
Shell 0-40 lol
