2013 PowerWagon looking to lift

Post by Girlpower » Wed Jan 18, 2017 9:32 pm

Hi, new to forum and sorry if this has been asked before

We have a stock 2013 PowerWagon. We want to lift a bit and put 37 inch tires on, 37s will almost fit but they rub when turned

Dodge suggested a BDS 4 inch lift

the PW already has a 2 inch factory lift. Do they take the original lift out, so that the final lift ends up just being 4 inches?

If we put the lift in, does that screw anything else up, like the sway bar disconnect or anything else?

Sorry, we ask Dodge, but the staff there don't always know the answer.

Great Year for a PW!!
Others are WAY more in tune than I am with these things but I think it comes down to what you want to do with the rig and whats your budget. (on that note. Just double what ever you are thinking and you will be thankful you did it proper the first time).
With that in mind Ill throw out: Thuren Fabrication, Carli Suspension, AEV, Dodge Off Road, Pure Performance, Icon,...Others?
I have Thuren stuff with Toyo RT 37s and i think it is more than adequate for were I am right now. I do have minor rubbing on control arms at FULL lock.

Welcome!

PW lift comes from springs only. Other springs replace stock lift, and will not add onto the stock 2" lift. As long as you stay at 3-4" lift, nothing else will get screwed up. No drop brackets, brake lines, etc are required. 6" lifts are a massive investment.

If you haven't done a lot of research and specifically want something from one of the other companies, I would really suggest to stick with either Carli or Thuren. They are the two pros in Dodge suspension, their kits are dialed, and they both have a different approach and one will probably suit you perfectly, though you'd probably be happy with both. BDS may be good but I don't know anything about their stuff. Oh, stay away from the dealer, they know absolutely nothing about suspension and there's enough guys on here with horror stories of the dealer installing something backwards, failing to lube driveshafts, etc. and they are a ripoff.

To clear 37's: on your year truck, a lift has no bearing on clearing those tires. Obviously if you want a lift though, you want a lift. What you need to clear with no rubbing are high clearance control arms. Both Thuren and Carli make excellent ones and many guys on here run both. Excellent products, similar joints. 37's will also smooth your ride out over lots of the little stuff. I love my Toyo MT's, I have a smaller size. Just know that they are HEAVY tires.

Lift: I would highly suggest a 3", maybe not a 4". Thuren and Carli run 3" systems. 4" is about the point your control arm angles start to get too sharp and the ride gets harsh. Thuren springs are soft linear rates, and are generally meant to be used with a well tuned shock. Softest ride realistically, and very capable. Carli has dual rate springs. The ride height will be in a cush soft zone, but with the weight of the 4th gens plus the winch the soft zone tends to become inactive very fast and you ride in the second, stiff zone more. Lots of guys like these springs though, they are good. I was very impressed by Coder's truck with Carli springs and King 2.5's, he hit a whoop section fairly aggressively and we never touched bottom. Thurens springs will give you more lift for sure. Carlis system I would describe as being good riding, with a heavy focus on never bottoming out.

Shocks: you didn't mention them but I would suggest them. Budget option, I've heard good things about Thurens Overland shocks. Stepping up to rebuild able shocks is a night and day difference in capability.

Where do you live in CA? I've got a set of nice riding 5100's in good shape I just took off you could use, I'm in Ontario area.

Hello Girlpower,

All you really need to run 37s is new indented front control arms with added clearance the suspension height can remain the same, as mentioned Carli Suspension and Thuren Fabrication both offer high quality versions of these. These arms will also work if you want taller 3" springs (adding 1" to PW suspension height) Good luck!

I have a 2012 Power Wagon with Carli suspension and 37x12.50R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers on my stock wheels. My control arms are the early Carli MIG/mild arms so, they do not have as much clearance as the newer arms. I have the 2.5 performance kit (2.5" King stainless shafted remote reservoir shocks) with the multi rate coil springs, Carli's normal rear lift springs (not their long travel), fabricated towers, and Thuren rear shackles. With the Thuren shackles on the middle whole, I ended up with approximately 2" of front lift and 1" of rear lift. (it is listed as a 3" lift but, that is 3" for a non-Power Wagon) The only clearance issue I have is my tires rubbing my control arms preventing steering from reaching full lock. I think the new high clearance arms allow more steering angle than mine do though so, should be an improvement over my setup.

The suspension is actually a bit firmer than my stock suspension was. It is clear that it is built for use at speed as it smooths out greatly with increased velocity. That's a bit opposite of what I usually use the truck for offroad, which is rock crawling. Overall though, I am very happy with my suspension setup. For a lifted truck, my truck feels very sporting and (IMO) actually rides better than a stock 2014+. To me the stance looks great, I think the truck should have come this way stock!

RAM4ROKS, I am not so sure there is any other individual out there who has used and abused their PW anymore than you have. Congrats!

LOL! Thanks, I think!

That may be true of the 4th gens but, a couple of the crazy 3rd gen guys are rocking Wagons that make mine look showroom fresh!

The front bumper didn't get too awfully beat. (4 small dents?) It's the rear that got almost ripped off by a tree and then I just took a Sawzall to it and the fenders!:

Going to have to remember that one!

Only problem with not running a front bumper (or those anti-submarining or whatever bars) is that my winch mount frame now has some gouges in it.

Thanks all for your input. I have heard of Carli. Only reason we looking at BDS is that Dodge suggested. We were thinking of having Dodge install in case there are issues, then we have the dealership to go back on..

PS Black Pearl.. That is our PW exactly

LOL! Well, I am planning to do a bed cage with some rub rails that should prevent me from collapsing the bedsides, does that count?

Some of the trails that I go on, my truck literally would not be able to fit if it had a full exocage! (it has to think thin thoughts as it is now to squeeze through! LOL!)

I had the bds lift on my 2011. Ripped it off after 2000km because it was spine jarring. Kit is still sitting in my garage.
I replaced everything with Thuren suspension and I am extremely impressed. You can build a little as you go if you want.

More stuff to come if my wife allows it!

Thanks all. I will look up Carli and Thuren. I made a mistake with the 37's. It is 35's the other 1/2 has. We have stock 33's on now.

He wants it lifted a bit to put the tires on and to ensure he does not bottom out. Does not do a lot of rock climbing but does cross rivers when hunting and last trip he hit a boulder in the river and dented the after market bush guard he bought
