Problimatic PW years
Problimatic PW years
Hello,
I am looking into purchasing a Power Wagon, I am not partial to any year, new or used. However, I did some research and found that 2014 was not a good year for dodge 2500's and was wondering if there are other bad years or what years are "Good" years to get. I found a 2010 Power Wagon with 15k miles for $38k(can probably talk them into lowering the price) that I am interested in but not sure if that is in the area of "Good" years or not. I also got my local dealer down to $52k for a new 2016 so I am debating between the two at the moment and just don't want to purchase a "bad year". Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I cannot comment much on your question regarding which years to watch out for. I thought I would comment more on the 2016 you mentioned. I purchased a 2016 about a month ago. Laramie & loaded with every option except Ram Box & Clearance lights. That means dual alternators, sunroof and everything else. It was $51K and change. I'm in Colorado so pricing may very some by region? You didn't mention if the 2016 was a Laramie or SLT or ? Just thought I would throw some info out there if you are trying to negotiate on the 2016. I would normally say that since the updated trucks for 2017 will be coming out soon, they would be more willing to get the old style off the lot. But PW's seem to sell quick in Colorado. I chose to buy a 2016 because I don't care for the looks of the 2017 but that's just my opinion. I also purchased the lifetime warranty but that's not included in the $51K. It was an additional $3K. If it's a Laramie, it sounds like a good deal. If it's an SLT or Tradesman, not so much. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Problimatic PW years
My thoughts:
I really couldn't say that there are any good or bad years. Production numbers are in the 1000-2000 vehicles per year I would guess. Just not a lot numbers to deal with. Unless owners post on forums like this there isn't a lot of info. With that in mind here are some of the usual issues.
LOCKERS: I would say this has been the number one common issue over the years. Hard to engage or not working at all. Any part of these systems can be at fault. Dealers even have hard time with fixing. Expensive if not under warranty. See "serv4wd light"..
FRONT END: Just about all front end parts can use upgrading. Ball joints, tie rod ends, steering box, control arms. See "death wobble" for more info.
EXHAUST STUDS: Manifold tends to warp and breaks studs.
If buying used I would start looking in these areas for problems.
Hope this helps. Welcome to forum.

If buying used. Make sure sure it still has the winch. The old owners sometimes remove the winch and sell them separately.

I think you made a wise decision to get the life time warranty for 3k...Jmarklowitz wrote:Hello, I cannot comment much on your question regarding which years to watch out for. Thank you fbenross. I've never paid for any extended warranty before and probably never will on anything else. I hope to take my grand kids hunting/fishing in it in 20 or 30 years. There are so many parts and electric components, we decided to do it this one time. Your scout is beautiful! Great job! Sorry OP. Not trying to hi jack your thread

I was in the same boat. Never bought a warranty in my life, but some reason couldnt pass on the lifetime for the pw.
As far as problematic years, I dont think there is any particular year that is realy any better or worse than the others.
If electronic nannies are a concern, look for a 3rd gen or pre '13. That is when electronics seemed to start getting crazy.
If cab room is a concern, you will be much happier with a 4th gen. If size is a concern on the trail, you will be much happier with a 3rd gen.
Best of luck with your decision!

Also, not sure if it matters to you or not or if you already know, but if you are interested in a regular cab than that limits you to the 3rd gen also. Same with the manual trans.

I love my 09. No real issues besides maintenance. And it's a 3rd gen body with the 2nd gen engine which is badass

I love my 06 more than you love your 09
