G56 clutch

Post by wt61443 » Tue Sep 27, 2016 9:24 pm

Hello all. I searched the forum and did find a few hits, but there isn't much out there on the G56 clutch replacement. My throw-out bearing has gone/is going out in my truck and I am having my mechanic replace it along w/the clutch. It seem I can go back to the factory or replace both w/Centerforce. What is the general consensus? I have an 06 w/65K miles on it (funny how someone else said theirs went out at THE SAME TIME!). My mechanic quoted me factory parts (to my knowledge) of $550 (labor will be addt. of course). It looks like I can get the centerforce parts for about $500 so its a virtual wash. I realize some aftermarket parts are better in some cases, and then sometimes not. Thanks so much. :patriot:

These two companies are the biggest in the diesel world of dodge clutches. I believe they both do plenty of g56 stuff. Perhaps they'd be worth talking to. Good luck sir!

I am not too knowledgeable in the G-56 parts either. I will also need one some day. Currently @ 43,000+. Make SURE you tell them it is a G-56 with a HEMI, as I think they are different. I think the diesels use a dual clutch in their G-56 version. I think the HEMI uses a single clutch.

Found this: http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2008/docs/dr/ts.pdf

Looks like the Hemi clutch is 290 mm and the diesel is 318 mm. Hemis have a "normal" flywheel (whatever that is) vs a dual mass on the diesels. http://forum.powerwagonregistry.org/vie ... f=2&t=2430

Hi,

I put a centerforce dual friction clutch into my 07 Ram, my throwout bearing also went out somewhere around 70,000, got 110 on it now and no complaints.

Also you can get a new flywheel for about a 100 bucks from Dodge, I replaced mine as we don't have any place that will resurface a flywheel in a day so was better than the waiting game.

I've run 2 stock clutches and now on a centerforce, and I will be going back to a stock clutch. For normal people the centerforce may be a good clutch, but for how I use (and abuse) my truck it's not for me.

And a few jeeps for good measure.

As a 2006 G-56 owner I would like to know how you compare the different clutches.

Thanks all that have replied, but yes, do tell TrueCowboy. What are the pros and cons in your opinion? Thanks.

I don't like the feel of engagementof of the CF and due to it being a weighted clutch (the centrifgual weights make the clutch grab harder the more rpm it has, also the weights rattle and can be annoying at idle with the clutch out) I feel it doesn't apply near the clamping force like the stocker at low rpm, but it does make for a very light clutch pedal. For a normal person the CF is a fine clutch, but for me and using my truck as a hauler, and doing truck pulls, it's not for me.

Bad way to describe this is if you sidestep the stock clutch with a little rpm you can break the tires loose. With the CF if I do this, it will just slip until the wheel speed and rpms can match (without the tires ever spinning). This is a vid of pure abuse, but with that stock clutch, and I could break the tires loose going into 4th. With the CF I can't hardly break the tires loose in 2nd from a launch, and the motor is making more power now than it was in this vid.

I haven't truck pulled or wheeled this truck too much since the CF went in, but I know if I did I would be already pulling it out.

06Wagon also installed a CF and his did not stand up to the abuse of truck pulling. Below is pulled from his posts.

I think it's safe to say the the new Centerforce clutch is trashed.... Flywheel is hot spotted bad. And that was a new flywheel/clutch installed this past spring.

I think it's safe to say that their clutch isn't what it's cracked up to be. For a daily driver (or more normal driving) it would be fine.

My factory clutch lasted 2 years of heavy pulling and 65k miles. This one lasted 500 miles and about 10 hooks.

Thanks for the info. It's good to know the stock clutch is stout. But now I'm wondering about the throw-out bearing. Is the stock one a weak link? mine seems a bit noisy.

I've never had a problem with the throwout bearings so I can't really comment. My factory ones worked good, and when I bought the CF, I also got their throwout bearings, and it was identical to the stocker so no benefit/detriment as far as I can tell. I have more problem with a noisy input shaft bearing that I might have to address sooner rather than later.

I would use another stock clutch before I'd use a centerforce clutch.

I'm running a custom built clutch made by Travis Centers (Trav's 4x4 performance) out of Kentucky.
I have about $900 in mine (including a new sfi approved flywheel). Granted, mine is built/weighted for 850-900hp.

I would not recommend the same one for a daily driver, but he can make one suited for that.

Thanks so much for those that replied and their input. It sounds like I will be having my mechanic order the factory parts!

Please keep track of the part #'s & how much the dealer charges for them & labor, even if it is covered under warranty.
