Rear axle locker/limited slip

Post by Easttnrhino » Mon Sep 19, 2016 6:23 am

I have read where the early power wagons with the10.5 rear axle had a limited slip when not electronic locked, do the 4th Gen with 11.5 rear have the limited slip when not locked also.

But don't count on our rear LSD in situations where either wheel has zero traction (ice or up in the air). It won't help at all in those situations - I spent the time and tested it out - the zero traction wheel just spins.

Helical LSD's need some torque through the drive shaft to lock up. I can feel mine when it hooks up, and I did a test last year with ice under one wheel and gravel/asphalt under the other (I got two skid marks). If you have a tire in the air, that's why we have lockers. My LSD works just fine for most driving conditions.

Ironically, one wheel in the air is probably the situation when the locker would work quickest, as it would definitely see a difference in wheel speed which would allow the actuator to line up and engage.

Applying the Emergency brake just enough to allow forward movement worked with my limited slip Jeeps. It may help you out of a jam sometime if your locker wont lock up. I havent tried this with the truck yet
