6.4 hemi smoking

Post by Boomerttl » Tue Aug 16, 2016 8:38 pm

Every once in awhile when I remote start my 6.4 I notice a puff of grey smoke coming out off the exhaust pipe, anybody else ever noticed this, or know why maybe? The dealer changes my oil, can't remember witch brand they said, but said it was synthetic, I buy my fuel just dang near out of the exact same pump at Conoco supposedly ethanol free, but who knows, but like I said it doesn't do it all the time, last time I noticed it was well over a month ago.

I have noticed this also. From what i have gathered, it only does it on the second start up after i originally start the truck very briefly and then shut it right off.

I backed out of my garage the other day on a cold start, then shut it right off. When i started it up shortly after that it looked like an old saturn with 200k miles singing the blues for about 5 seconds.

Well today at work I moved it from one parking lot at about 5:00 to another a little closer when I got off at 7:00 and was walking up to it and started it and seen it, as well as everyone else and got to hear, oh the big bad power wagon is smoking a bit there, kinda hurt my pride a little, lol

Is there a similar issue to the 5.7L, that's corrected with a catch can???

FWIW, i checked my throttle body at 40k & it was clean as a whistle. My 04 2500 5.7 was just coated with black tar like shit at 40k. Ran a LOT better when I cleaned it. 43k on my 08 now !

Know 392 issue, my old Challenger SRT8 did it too. So far the Hellcat hasn't though. I wouldn't worry about it.

Sounds like either a bit of oil blow-by or coolant making its way to the cylinder when its cold.

I had a similar symtom on my old 5.7, ended up eventually manifesting into a blown headgasket.

Basically, it would seep coolant while it was cold, but once everything was warmed up/ thermally expanded, it went away.

Until one day, it didnt go away. lol

I haven't noticed my 6.4 doing this yet but I don't look at my exhaust pipe on start up that often. However, My 5.7 Hemi in my 2010 used to do the same thing after a quick start up shut off cycle followed by a later restart. My guess is the valve guides will allow oil to weep by when cold. Basically what i'm saying is during a quick cold start immediately followed by shutting the engine off, engine oil is pumped up on top of the heads and then it weeps down between the cold valve stems/valve guides into the cylinder. Next time you start the truck you get a quick puff of oil smoke.

Under normal driving everything is hot so when the truck is shut off and the valve guides/valve stems are expanded and tight. The oil drains from the heads through drain holes before the valves cool off enough to allow seepage so you have no smoke on the next start up.

FWIW, at work we have a Ford F350 with a 5.4 and it will do the same puff of smoke if it's started, then shut off quickly, then restarted later on.

If the OP is shutting his truck off hot and getting smoke on restart then a trip to the dealer may be in order. If the smoke is happening after the above described condition I say…… No Worries.

Hellcat has a completely different engine, it's smaller. My Scat Pack with the 392 hasn't do it yet.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Very true about the HC engine. My 2011 392 Challenger did do it though, first startup if it had sat awhile.
